Tonika Lewis Johnson on her Reporter days

Watch dynamic artist and journalist Tonika Lewis Johnson as she recalls her time as an intern at The Chicago Reporter. The founder of the award-winning Folded Map Project lovingly describes the long hours and dedicated  fact-checking she did as a Reporter intern, and how her time there helped shape her powerful and  impactful documentary and photography projects on issues of race and equity. Our thanks to the folks at Groundswell Educational Films for producing this series.

Marking 50 Years: Join Alums of The Chicago Reporter July 21-22, 2022

We’ll be celebrating 50 years of investigative reporting on race and equity Thursday, July 21, at the newly opened Bronzeville Winery.

Then, on July 22, the Friends of The Chicago Reporter will be screening oral history videos of Reporter alumni and discussing the impact of the Reporter’s five decades of data-driven investigative work. Mark your calendars! More details coming soon.

Paul Sherry, Mayor Harold Washington, Roy Larson, Lillian Calhoun and John A. McDermott celebrate the Reporter's 15th anniversary in 1987.

Upcoming Journalism Workshop on Uncovering Systemic Racism

Drawing from the talent and work of The Chicago Reporter alumni, we will hold a virtual workshop in April for students, academics, reporters and editors on the most effective tools, methods and strategies to use to investigate systemic racism.

This is an opportunity for:

  • Reporters seeking professional development skills;

  • Journalism students—graduate and undergraduate;

  • Community members interested in better understanding investigative reporting.

Date and time to be determined. For more details, contact Susy Schultz at susy.schultz@gmail.com.

Friends of The Chicago Reporter believes that data-driven investigative reporting on race and equity in Chicago is as crucial as ever. Our mission is to ensure that the Reporter’s signature brand of journalism, mentoring and training endures for future generations. If you’re interested in underwriting or sponsoring events related to the 50th anniversary and the workshop on uncovering systemic racism, please email us  at friends.of.TCR@gmail.com.
