We have a new way to live, learn and laugh as a neighborhood!

This digital publication has been established to build community and connect our neighbors along with supporting our greater community in the Madison area. We recognized that without a community gathering space or town square we needed to look to multiple means to connect each other as neighbors and collectively work to build our community. The Birchwood-Oaks Neighborhood Association was established to do just that!

Please feel free to forward this publication and encourage neighbors to sign up to become a member of this association using this form.

Our neighborhood has seen a few flags, lights, and signs of support for Ukraine, consider joining the support by looking at these ways to support the Ukrainian humanitarian causes and for those that want to show support for our neighbors with family and connections involved in the conflict. Other ideas: post a flag, change your lights, put up a sign, get that chalk back out once the snow goes away… Here are some images and ideas.

This month…. Meet the Thorn’s

This month we get introduced to the Thorn family, including the association treasurer Jeffrey, and his wife Jenn, son Jackson, who will be 2 in April, and their two cattle dogs Yogi and Luka. They moved to Birchwood Point South in July of 2019. This is their first home that they have owned in Madison, but have lived in the Madison area since college with the exception of a 2 year stint in Brooklyn, NY from 2017-2019. Jeffrey willingly took the role as treasurer because he wanted to get more involved with the community. Since he deals with a lot of numbers in his job, the Treasurer seemed like the perfect fit.

They (formally) met in the summer of 2014 through mutual friends. Both attended UW-Madison, but actually didn't meet until the year after they finished college. “As we got to know each other, we discovered that we hung out with a lot of the same friend groups in college, and probably were at several of the same gatherings. We started dating soon after we met. From there, we moved into an apartment together and adopted our first dog, Yogi. After that, we had a brief 2 year stint living in Brooklyn, New York. While still living in New York, we got married in August of 2018.”

After a bit more time in New York, they decided it was time to move back and officially call Madison, WI home. They moved into their first home in July of 2019, and promptly adopted a second dog, Luka. By April of 2020, they welcomed their first child, Jackson into the world. Since then, they have loved watching him grow, and have loved making their house into a home.

“We like this neighborhood because there are plenty of families that are in the same stage of life as us, with young children. There is a mix of families in other stages of life as well, so we also appreciate the diversity of the neighborhood. We are always willing to offer a helping hand with tasks, watching pets or watching children. In other words, we like to be "neighborly."

As a family, they like going on walks, and playing in the backyard. Jackson loves to toss the ball for the dogs and watch them run. As avid Wisconsinites and Badgers they also love cheering on all of the Wisconsin college and professional sports teams.

“We like Madison because it is a good mix of small town feel and city life. There are also plenty of areas to enjoy nature and the outdoors.”

Jackson likes "Wheels on the Bus" and "Itsy Bitsy Spider." Jenn and Jeffrey like all sorts of music, but favorite is 90s alternative music. Jenn is a teacher, so public education has always been important. They also rescued both of our dogs, so we support the local animal rescues. Puerto Rico was their favorite vacation since it was our honeymoon and they love relaxing on the beach or by the pool. The pandemic has limited family travel, but with Spring break coming they are going to Florida at the end of March for our first big trip as a whole family.

Thanks to the Thorn family for sharing who they are and giving back to our neighborhood and community as association treasurer and as a school teacher at Allis Elementary.

Blood Drives

American Red Cross is facing a national blood crisis – its worst blood shortage in over a decade, posing a concerning risk to patient care. Amid this crisis, doctors have been forced to make difficult decisions about who receives blood transfusions and who will need to wait until more products become available. Blood and platelet donations are critically needed to help prevent further delays in vital medical treatments. The Red Cross asks the country to roll up a sleeve to help ensure people receive the care they need. Make an appointment to give blood or platelets as soon as possible by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767)
