Community members,
TODAY IS THE DAY!!!

Join us on Zoom at 10:30 THIS MORNING,
Friday, March 18th
to give your input
on a new 911 emergency response system
being developed for the state of Colorado.

This is an opportunity
to weigh in on changes that
impact the safety and well-being
of our community.

Here's what you need to know...

CCDC, along with several partner organizations from the disability community, has been working with the Colorado Department of Public Safety to improve how emergency responders interact with people who have disabilities. A current problem we have been focusing on is how to improve 911 dispatch services for callers whose communication is affected by a disability.

Specifically, when a person calls 911, the 911 operator has approximately 30 seconds to determine the type of emergency response that should be dispatched. When the call involves a person who is experiencing a mental health crisis or has unique communication needs, 911 operators may not know about the person’s unique needs. As a result, the operator might not dispatch the most appropriate emergency response; for example, it may not be the best option to dispatch the 911 call to traditional law enforcement to respond to an emergency call if someone is experiencing a mental health crisis. Similarly, the emergency responder may be unaware that they should adjust their approach to accommodate the unique needs of the person in crisis.

With these issues in mind, local jurisdictions throughout Colorado are starting to develop specialized responses for individuals in these situations. CCDC and other disability organizations are currently working with various agencies to develop solutions that will help 911 operators dispatch the most appropriate emergency response to improve outcomes and decrease default criminal justice outcomes.

Please help us improve emergency response communications by joining an open community meeting TODAY from 10:30 am until 11:30 am VIA ZOOM. During the meeting, the Colorado Department of Public Safety will be giving a demo of a new emergency response system that is being developed, and we need our community members to learn about this new system and offer their feedback to ensure that the system works for people with disabilities.

Please take advantage of this important opportunity
to improve safety for our community.
Feel free to share this information
with anyone and everyone who might be interested in attending.
