Welcome to this March edition of your Sector Support e-bulletin. We have included the latest news, an article about the new regulatory framework for Aged Care and several workshops and trainings which will all assist in preparing for the new Aged Care environment and the reforms. Take care.

A new Regulatory Framework
for Aged Care: considerations for existing providers

The Aged Care reforms will change the way Aged Care is assessed, funded and regulated. Together with the new Aged Care Act, the new Support at Home and its modernised regulatory framework will aim to strengthen and enhance the protection and rights of older Australians.

Latest News
Progress made a year on from the Aged Care Royal Commission’s Final Report
The Minister for Health and Aged Care published a media release to discuss the reform undertaken since the release of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality & Safety Final report in late February 2021. With the Five Pillars Five Year plan and a 18.3 billion commitment, some progress has been made with:
  • establishment of the National Aged Care Advisory Group and the Council of Elders
  • face-to-face assistance for seniors at Services Australia centres with coverage at all 80 services by December 2022
  • $10 per resident daily supplement to improve residential care, especially nutrition
  • 33,800 new training places and 115 nursing scholarships
  • a 25% increase in access to home care and a significant reduction in waiting times

Inquiry into Unpaid Carer’s leave launched

In a joint media release  with the Minister for Health and Aged Care and the Minister for Senior Australians and Aged Care Services, it was announced that the Productivity Commission has been asked to undertake an Inquiry into the merits of extending leave entitlements under the Fair Work Act to family and friend carers of older Australians. This was one of the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety (ACRC). More information in the Productivity Commission’s website.

Get involved: help design the future structure of the Australian aged care workforce.

The Aged Care Workforce Industry Council and BDO Australia, have commenced working on the design of the future structure of the Australian aged care workforce. This important project will document and define the job roles, career pathways and job families that will be required across the workforce to deliver models of care which holistically address the physical, social and emotional needs of older people.

Postponed - Quality indicator pilot for in-home aged care 

The pilot of quality indicators for in-home aged care has been postponed. This will enable greater alignment between the new Support at Home Program and expansion of the National Aged Care Mandatory Quality Indicator Program (QI Program).

Getting it Right – Consumer Rights in Aged Care is a series of three, one-hour, on-line sessions that explore in depth the link between each consumer right, the Aged Care Quality Standards and the accepted recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety. Workshop: Board Governance for CHSP & Home Care Providers

Thursday 17 and 24 March 2022,
5.00 – 7.00pm, online

Organised by ACSA, this series of workshops will support providers to position themselves for reform, by exploring legal responsibilities, risk management, clinical governance, informed decision making, consumer experiences and, strategic business models.

It looks to build capacity and help navigate the unique challenges faced by small regional and remote providers. It will also explore the requirements of the Aged Care Quality Standards and proposed regulations under the new Aged Care Act. For more information and to register, click here.

Free Workshop: CHSP and HCP Financial Management in Aged Care
Wednesday & Thursday 6-7 April 2022, 10.00-11.30am, online
Organised by Sector Support and Development projects in 11 Regions, this workshop will assist aged care service providers (both CHSP funded & HCP providers) to prepare for the new Aged Care system proposed by the Federal Government. The workshop will be facilitated by Stewart Brown and will provide a practical, hands-on approach, giving workshop participants take-home tools and strategies that they can easily implement in their workplace.
