Insights into the Urban Transports Community's first high-level workshop in Brussels // May 11, 2022

The first high-level workshop was focused on sustainable mobility solutions for a greener & better experience living and visiting the Mediterranean. It gathered 40 participants from European institutions and organisations, as well as Mediterranean-centred entities. Some of these biggest upcoming challenges awaiting European Cities in the months and years to come like the Green Deal and the Cities Mission were discussed. It was the occasion to discuss the main challenges that the Mediterranean faces in terms of mobility, all the more for cities that are dependant on the third sector - and in particular tourism.

COVID-19 impacted them and adaption is needed both in terms of policies and in terms of resilient and sustainable urban mobility systems. Mediterranean cities and tourist destinations have the potential to provide best practices on how to build an active mobility in the urban space for all - pedestrians, cyclists and other individuals who may not want to use private cars.

The Urban Transports Community goes local!

Back in December 2021, CIVINET CY-EL organised a side-session during its first conference devoted to the first Urban Transports' policy brief (here in French) on active mobility, issued few weeks before the event. The event was aimed to mainstream policy recommendations about soft mobility, it attracted a rich audience of stakeholders and local authorities. The main conclusions and points of interest turned around the need to support municipalities to implement and expand soft mobility projects.

The first months of 2022 have seen two more events organised by the partnership in this series of regional workshops and debates, with the same vision of bringing the learnings and recommendations of the community to a territorial level.

The Urban Transports Community is an Interreg MED Programme initiative launched in November 2016 and renewed in October 2019 till December 2022. The Community is promoting sustainable urban mobility planning in the Euro-Mediterranean region as an effective tool to reduce carbon emissions and improve the quality of life of the population and the environment.

Since November 2016, the Community featured by a horizontal project has gathered seven territorial cooperation projects co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and almost 120 organisations (public authorities, private companies, universities, NGOs and international organisations) from 12 Euro-Mediterranean countries. In this second phase the Community has the opportunity to bring the capitalisation process to the next level by providing local authorities with a tailor-made support to implement the replicable solutions developed and tested by our Community.

The Urban Transports Community is featured by a project lead by  MedCities, in partnership with UNIMED Mediterranean Universities Union (Rome, Italy),  Area Science Park (Trieste, Italy), CODATU (Lyon, France), CIVINET CY-EL (Cyprus-Greece), POLIS, Cities and Regions for transport innovation (Brussels, Belgium), and Durres Municipality (Durres, Albania).
