The Quaker History of Eastern State Penitentiary

Tonight, Arch Street Meeting House is hosting Matt Murphy from Eastern State Penitentiary for an evening program! Matt's presentation will discuss the many connections between Quakers and Eastern State Penitentiary.

Matt Murphy has served as the Tour Programs Supervisor at Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site since 2015. Matt is responsible for creating major programming and oversees the hiring, training, and evaluation of the education staff. Matt is a seasoned expert in facilitative dialogue methodology. From Alcatraz Island to Independence National Historical Park, Matt has served as a cultural heritage interpreter at sites across the nation and has appeared on popular media outlets such as the Washington Post and the Travel Channel.

International Day of Monuments & Sites

 

April 16th - 17th

Philadelphia celebrates International Day of Monuments and Sites on Monday, April 18th, but Arch Street Meeting House will be observing the celebration on April 16th & 17th. ASMH is closed to the public on Mondays.

The International Day of Monuments and Sites is celebrated internationally on April 18th to recognize the cultural significance of important landmarks and sites of observance. Philadelphia is home to 67 national historic landmarks.

New Exhibit Unveiling at ASMH
 

Friday, May 27th

Join us at Arch Street Meeting House on Friday, May 27th as we celebrate the installation of our brand new outdoor exhibits! We're inviting our visitors and supporters to explore the new installations, enjoy complimentary refreshments, and Meet Quaker History.

A night for the whole family, attendees can engage with new stories in our exhibits while meeting Lucretia Mott, Francis Watkins Harper, Elizabeth Drinker, and Samuel Nicholas.

A Practice of Action: Supporting Communities with Creative Expression
 
On Sunday, March 27th, award-winning Philadelphia artist, Keir Johnston, and ASMHPT Executive Director, Sean Connolly, presented “A Practice of Action: Supporting Communities with Creative Expressions” at Newtown Friends Meeting.
Together, they spoke about the collaborative creation of a new piece of public art by Keir Johnston that will be installed at Arch Street Meeting House in the near future.
ASMH Supports Ukraine
 
On Saturday, March 19th, Arch Street Meeting House was inspired by several other Philadelphia  museums and historic sites, and contributed all cash proceeds for the day to Unicef in support of Ukraine.
