Dear Stewards,

I am pleased to announce Alice (Xue) Dong will be joining Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods as Program Manager on March 22nd! Alice is moving to Sonoma County from Los Angeles and brings with her a great deal of talent, experience, and passion. She’s worked with volunteers and teachers, developed and managed programs, and is passionate about education and interpretation.

As our new program Manager, Alice will lead Stewards' environmental education and stewardship programs. She is a Certified Interpretive Trainer (CIT) and a Registered Environmental Professional. Throughout her career, Alice has been proactive in communicating science to the public and bringing communities together in meaningful ways. Become a Community Scientist
Volunteer to monitor for Viola anduca, the main food source for the
endangered Myrtle's Silverspot butterfly.
This spring through early summer we need hikers to record observation of the Viola anduca flower, a main food source for the endangered Myrtle's Silverspot Buttterfly. This is an amazing opportunity to become a community scientist, hike areas that are visually breathtaking, and participate in a very important project. You will be asked to download and use the Calflora app to help you identify and record observations. To sign up, contact Chris Heintzelman with California State Parks at Chris.Heintzelman@parks.ca.gov or 707-865-3173. To view a presentation on this project, visit Stewards website.
Whale Watch at Bodega Head
Left to right: Whale Watch Volunteers, Norma, Jeremy and Laura
This past weekend was very windy at Bodega Head. So windy, that it was difficult to spot the waterspouts from the whales. The best days to spot are "low to no wind, and a calm ocean," says Whale Watch coordinator Norma Jellison. When the conditions are right, Whale Watch Volunteers can be found on weekends from 10am to 2pm at the southern end of the parking lot at Bodega Head. Look for the green vests that say "Whale Watch", and learn about whales, their lifecycle, and how to spot them during their migration.

Trail Crew Report
Thirteen intrepid volunteers mounted an all-out effort to clear wood and metal debris, high weeds, dangling branches, and miscellaneous messes to prepare Pond Farm Pottery for welcoming groups back to the iconic property.  With power and hand tools we moved out truckloads of materials to the burn pile and recycling area, leaving Pond Farm brilliant and ready to receive visitors once more. From Pond Farm we moved to lunch in the Forest Theater, where Scotty Lawyer and Justin Lindenberg outlined an ambitious project to repair/replace all the dilapidated benches in the theater. A contingent of volunteers accompanied Scotty to the Discovery Trail to remove an attractive nuisance cable stuck beneath a massive log which had fallen onto the boardwalk.

Volunteers Needed
Volunteers needed at our Jenner and Armstrong Visitor Centers
The Armstrong and Jenner Visitor's Centers need volunteers.  It's a fun and easy opportunity to help visitors enjoy the natural beauty of Armstrong and the Sonoma Coast.  Volunteers are needed for 3 hour shifts to provide information on the best walks/hikes, plants, animals in our parks and so much more.  We will train you on everything you need to know.  Whether you can do a weekly, monthly or occasional shift, we would love to have you join us to bring in important revenue to support Stewards programs.  Best of all, the hours quickly add up towards a day use parks pass.  Contact Kathi Moore at kathiimooree@gmail.com if you are interested.
Help Remove Ice Plant
Help remove ice plant at Bodega Head
Volunteers with California Native Plant Society meet the second Sunday of each month from 10AM to 1PM at Bodega Head to remove ice plant. Bring your gloves, clippers, knee pads, your friends... and meet new friends along the way!  Join us at the far west parking lot near the restrooms (Bodega Bay Trailhead on google maps). Text Alynn at 707-321-1748 to RSVP. Hard working teens encouraged! Only heavy rain cancels. Extra gloves, clippers and knee pads are available if needed.
Hi Folks; Here’s a few pictures from my trail patrol today (3.6.2022) on the beautiful Sonoma Coast.  Cheers!  Mark Anderson
Check out this beautiful boy!
Rachel Hallaway, Field Operations Assistant Manager for Stewards, discovered this family of alligator lizards while working in the back country near Austin Creek.  "The top photo shows what they look like when they are getting ready to shed their skin.  About 3 or 4 days before it happens, a really beautiful irridescence starts to show!  The photo bottom right is an adult, and the photo bottom right, is a juvenile. Cool, eh?"
