Neighbours really matter

Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the devastating floods in Queensland and New South Wales.

We acknowledge the incredible neighbourliness shown by those helping out, and by those impacted by the floods – often the same people. To the unofficial and official volunteers, emergency services, councils and community organisations doing whatever you can to help – thank you.

In good times and challenging times, knowing your neighbours makes a positive difference. It is with this in mind that this Verandah is all about connection, the benefits, and what you can do to connect with your neighbours this Neighbour Day - and every day.

In this edition, we release new research findings from Neighbour Day 2021, share a new Neighbourly Blog from Dr Leanne Beagley CEO of Mental Health Australia and launch our new Community Service Announcement video. We also announce the winners of our annual Tell Us Your Story Competition; invite you to follow the countdown on social media; join in with our selfie signs, and more!

We encourage everyone to join in and help us celebrate the 20-year anniversary of Neighbour Day and build the communities you want to live in - one relationship at a time.

So grab a cuppa and join us on your virtual Verandah!

Watch our new TVC!

In our annual Neighbour Day surveys, you have told us that a TV Commercial Community Service Announcement video would be a great asset to help spread the neighbourly word across the nation.

For our 20th anniversary gift to ourselves and to Australia – here it is!

We hope you like it and we invite you to share it on your social media channels.

Together we can help end loneliness.

Loneliness, resilience and mental health

Relationships Australia has released the latest independent Neighbour Day research report by the Australian National University.

Findings show that in addition to reducing loneliness across the nation, Neighbour Day is particularly beneficial in promoting resilience and protecting the mental health of Australian community members during times of collective change or crisis.

Our research shows connected individuals and communities are more resilient in times of crises and that people involved in Neighbour Day across the years experience better mental health, sustained reductions in loneliness and reductions in psychological distress, which are all signs of ongoing resilience.

Neighbourly Blog

By Dr Leanne Beagley, Chief Executive Officer - Mental Health Australia

Personal connection in the new world

It is a new world.

The pandemic has left us with a new appreciation of our home and workspaces. It has left us with increased recognition of the important contribution school makes to families. It has reminded us how critically important the health, aged care and disability workforces are in supporting and caring for us, and those we love. We have all experienced some form of physical, and also social, isolation.

Most importantly from our point of view at Mental Health Australia, the pandemic has underlined the reality that connection between people is paramount to protecting our mental health. Before the pandemic when we talked about “mental health”, I think we meant “mental illness”. Whereas now there is broader community understanding now that mental health also means the impact of stress, grief, fear of the future and importantly loneliness.

You told us your stories

Relationships Australia, as the home of Neighbour Day, acknowledges the role of all Australians in helping to tackle loneliness.

To reflect the Neighbour Day: Connecting Communities for 20 years theme for 2022, we invited people to tell us their stories of connections in recent times, or perhaps over the years. These connections may be one-off moments or regular and lasting interactions that created one to one relationships or became the starting point for an ongoing group.

In recent years, Australians have endured difficult times. The winners of this year’s Tell Us Your Story competition showcase amazing stories of connection and kindness, and highlight the many acts Australians are taking to support each other throughout the pandemic, and beyond.

These stories are great examples of the Neighbour Day spirit in action. We hope they encourage you to do something neighbourly to celebrate this Neighbour Day 27 March. We encourage all Australians to take inspiration from these stories and to seek opportunities to connect with their neighbours in safe ways and to support each other.

We hope these stories give you the confidence to try something – whether small acts of kindness or big neighbourly actions, to create connections and stay connected – every day.
