Bison Hunt Connects Whitehorse Students To The Meat They Eat
Yukon News / Dana Hatherly

About a dozen Whitehorse high school students went out on the range to learn about respectful bison hunting on the traditional territory of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations last week.

The Porter Creek Secondary School students were joined by Jim Welsch, hunter education coordinator for the Yukon department of Environment, Elder Harry Smith, and volunteers from the Yukon Fish and Wildlife Management Board, who are experienced hunters and outdoors people, in the Kluane Lake and Kloo Lake region from Feb. 28 to March 4.

Snowmobiles had been trucked out to the site for the students to travel into the bush. They set up camp in the woods and slept in wall tents. Read More HERE

Plains Bison Herd Successfully Re-Established
The Star / Jacob Miller

A new plains bison herd has been established in The Key First Nation through partnerships between Parks Canada and the Nature Conservancy of Canada.

On Feb. 1 the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, and Jennifer McKillop, Saskatchewan Regional Vice-President for Nature Conservancy of Canada, announced that 40 plains bison were successfully translocated to establish a new herd with The Key First Nation in Treaty 4.

This marks a historic moment for The Key First Nation; a nation that has worked closely with Parks Canada and the Nature Conservancy of Canada to return these culturally significant animals to their traditional lands. Read More HERE

Are Bison Wildlife? Colorado Conservation Group Asks State Game Agency
The Meat Eater / Ben Long

America just can’t seem to make up its mind about bison.

The buffalo is the official National Mammal of the United States and a lost icon of the West, to borrow from Steve Rinella’s book on the topic. Yet we are stuck with a strange double-vision when it comes to this massive, if inconvenient, beast.

A conservation group is pushing the Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife to classify bison as a big game species—a move they say is essential if that state ever plans to restore bison to a wild, free-ranging, and huntable population. Read More HERE

National Buffalo Museum Unveils New Digital Game
News Dakota / Darren Abrahamson

JAMESTOWN, N.D. (National Buffalo Museum) – The National Buffalo Museum has announced the installation of a new interactive feature as part of the museum’s exhibits.

On Friday March 11th, the museum will unveil an interactive digital matching game that lets visitors test their knowledge about Indigenous People’s use of bison in the past. The Bullock Texas State History Museum created the game and licensed it to the National Buffalo Museum.

The game features beautifully illustrated images and animations by artist Diana Marques, and explores uses of bison hides, meat, bones, and organs.

“This new exhibit element not only brings more interactivity to our gallery spaces, it also is a great bridge connecting our recently acquired bison organ puzzle to the historic indigenous made pieces on display in that gallery,” National Buffalo Museum Executive Director Ilana Xinos said.

“Exploring the anatomy of bison and connecting that to practical uses of the animal deepens visitors’ appreciation for the animal,” Xinos added.

The National Buffalo Museum’s mission is to advocate for the restoration of the North American Bison through education and outreach. For more information, contact Rachel Johnson at 701-252-8648 or collections@buffalomuseum.com.

The bison industry initiated a cost-of-production and production performance data collection program for bison operations involving cow/calf, backgrounders, and feedlot enterprises. The objective of this data collection program was to establish financial and production benchmarks against which producers could measure their performance. The program began in 2011 and has generated information that is very valuable for new entrants, producers, financial institutions, researchers and policy makers.  See the 2021 Report HERE
