Kleinman Political Science Student Essay Award
Deadline: Friday, March 18, 2022

The Department of Political Science has begun collecting applications for the Kleinman Political Science Student Essay Award. This is awarded to the student that submits the best essay on how the study of political science has shaped their goals. Essays could cover topics such as putting your coursework to action, knowledge gained outside of the classroom, or balancing intellectual curiosity, civic engagement, and job satisfaction. Submissions should be no longer than five pages in length. The award is generously funded by a gift from Sidney Kleinman.

Some potential prompts could include:
  • Knowledge gained outside of the classroom: Participating in internships, holding jobs, and being involved in organizations can be some of the most rewarding experiences during your time in college. Has there been a particular encounter or lesson you have learned a great deal from that did not take place in the classroom?

  • Putting your coursework to action: In your coursework, you look at politics from academic perspectives. You may also follow or find yourself participating in politics in your everyday life. How have you experienced those different perspectives?

  • Balancing intellectual curiosity, civic engagement, and job satisfaction: The purpose of a liberal arts education is to provide students with a skill set that can be applied to a range of professional fields. We know from research and alumni surveys that students are often surprised by how their liberal arts education has helped them land successful careers, while not sacrificing their passions to learn and do more. Have you thought about the intersection of intellectual curiosity, civic engagement, and job satisfaction? What does that look like to you?

Award Criteria: All Political Science majors and minors are welcome to apply for this award.

Award Amount: $1000 (Please note: If more than one student is selected, the amount will be distributed amongst the recipients.)

Number Awarded: 1-2

William Jennings Bryan Prize

Award Criteria: In deciding the winner of the prize, the Undergraduate Affairs Committee considers grade point average and pattern of course work, honors thesis (if relevant), future plans, and leadership activities at Michigan.

Award Amount: $500 for the Bryan Prize; $1000 for the Leadership Prize

Number Awarded: There are a total of four winners (three from the application pool and one leadership winner.)
