Dear Families,

You are receiving this newsletter because your student confirmed their participation in a study abroad program, and listed you as their emergency contact. We believe families are an important part of the study abroad experience, and we encourage you to review our Family Resources to help your student prepare for this incredible opportunity.

Have questions?

Please contact our team or encourage your student to connect with us through email at studyabroad@scu.edu.

  • Email is often the best way to reach us initially, especially if we need to follow-up with other campus departments or program providers and host institutions abroad, which can mean communicating across different time zones before we can answer your question.
  • We also have a Live Chat feature and various advising opportunities on the Advising section of our website at www.scu.edu/studyabroad.

Family Day Infosession

In this Family Day Video, SCU Study Abroad covers important information for Parents & Gaurdians of students studying abroad during the 2022-23 school year.

Program Contacts

Study abroad programs are organized by program providers and host institutions abroad. Program providers and host institutions can provide specific details about what it's actually like to be a student on their program including housing information, internship placements, on-site arrival instructions, course offerings, and more.

Affording Study Abroad

Costs & Withdrawal Fees

Once a student confirms their participation in a study abroad program, are liable for withdrawal fees. At a minimum, theyare responsible for a $500 withdrawal fee from SCU if they later decide not to participate.

However, after a student submits their phase 2 application to their program provider or host institution, and get closer to their departure date, they could owe a portion (if not all) of their program costs depending on their program's specific withdrawal policies.

Passports & Visas

Apply for (or Renew) Passport

There have been significant processing delays due to the impacts of the global pandemic. If your student needs to apply or renew their passport, please be sure they start the process now.

All students need a passport to travel internationally, and depending on their nationality/program location, they may also need to apply for a visa at a later date. To apply for a visa they'll need to have a valid passport, so this is a critical first step.

Travel Visas

Our staff cannot provide visa guidance. Visa application procedures vary widely from country to country and consulate to consulate.

Whether your student needs a visa depends on several factors: what the nationality of their passport is, their study abroad destination, and the duration of their study abroad program.

So Who Can Help?
We encourage students and families to reach out to their program provider or host institution using the program contacts included in this newsletter for questions about visas.
