March 10, 2022

Dear Calvary Family,

I just got back from Israel last Friday and, as always, it was an incredible experience to see the words on the pages of the Bible come to life in front of me. I highly encourage you to start prayerfully considering coming on our next trip in April 2024 - and to start saving up for it now, too! You can see daily posts updates with photos on our Trip Blog  or on my personal Facebook or Instagram accounts - @ericwakeling.

But I don’t mention the trip just to promote the next one. I was struck by something while waiting for a connecting flight in the Istanbul Airport as the woman behind me in line had a Russian passport and another man nearby had a Syrian passport. Our world is so big and also can be so small as well. In the midst of all we are seeing in the news with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, I was standing next to someone trying to get out of Russia and to Los Angeles with their American spouse. It just struck me as so crazy to be next to one another. Everyone is living a unique and challenging story.

We are connecting with our missionaries and ministry partners around the world to help in whatever small and big ways that we are able to help. One of our missionaries is currently in Romania helping with refugees as they land. Another one is in Moldova serving those in need who are flooding across the border. His Refuge (Seeking Refuge Prayer) ministry continues to serve refugees from multiple countries affected by war and poverty.

So there are a few ways that we can respond:

  1. Pray fervently and consistently for peace in Ukraine and the rest of Eastern Europe. Also, be praying for those refugees fleeing Ukraine.
  2. Give to Calvary Church’s Reach Fund and write “Ukraine” in the memo and we will give to ministry partners doing work in the region.
  3. Come to a Seeking Refuge prayer event and find out more about His Refuge Ministry - HisRefuge.org
  4. Have an understanding that there are victims of Putin’s atrocities in Ukraine, Russia, and the surrounding countries. Let’s treat the people we meet in airports, restaurants and our communities with love and compassion.

You are able to act. You are able to pray. You are able to learn and grow. You are able to make an impact. God is in charge. God is powerful. Lean into Him and His power as you might feel helpless to actually make a difference in the huge issues in our world.

May the Lord bless you and keep you,

Eric
