Welcome to this week's Caloundra Catholic Parish eNewsletter
Archbishop Mark has a message for you
First COVID, then the floods. Just when you thought it couldn’t get worse there was the horrific invasion of Ukraine, which may seem far way away but is really at our doorstep, because the struggle in Ukraine has global implications. It’s a struggle between two very different ways of organising human society – let’s call them democracy and autocracy. Since the break-up of the Soviet Union, Ukraine has sought to govern itself as a democracy where the people rule, and in recent times Russia has become increasingly an autocracy where one man rules, brutally. Ukraine dreams of independence and freedom, Russia dreams of regaining a lost empire. Sadly Russia even claims religious sanction for its genocidal attacks on Ukraine, with the head of the Russian Church promoting the war. This is the kind of thing that not only divides Christians but gives Christianity a bad name. It shows what happens when the Church is tied absolutely to nationalism. The Church has long struggled to maintain its freedom from the state, and for good reason. Christianity is tied to no nation, to no nationalist cause or ideology. That’s why the separation of Church and state has been one of the West’s greatest achievements. So say a prayer for Ukraine and for the peace of the world – that truth and not lies will prevail, that peace and not violence will have the victory.
