Special Character

Your talk matters

The words of our gospel, Jesus said: "For a person's words flow out of what fills their heart."

The defects of a person appear in their talk. If they are not very bright, you will pick it up quite quickly. If they are a bully, you will hear racist remarks and put-downs. We are told not to judge a book by its cover - you may see a person that is easy on the eye, but spend some time listening to their conversation before making your judgment of them. Do they say silly things? Do they spread gossip? Fake news? Conspiracy theories? Do they dominate the conversation never giving you a chance?

Jesus speaks of "the words flow out of what fills the heart" - if the words that flow are empty or nasty then the heart they flow from is likely to be empty and self-centred or nasty and dangerous.

Ecclesiasticus goes on to say "the test of a man is in his conversation." Use that test to judge the people you encounter, don't be fooled by looks, listen to the words they say, and judge them by what comes out of their mouths.

Jesus also talks about taking the plank out of your own eye before worrying about the splinter in someone else's. So, once you get good at judging people by the words they say, start listening to yourself.
  • Do you talk sense?
  • Are you constantly attention-seeking?
  • Are you respectful to the people you should show respect to?
  • Are you sarcastic and nasty or are you fun to talk with?
  • Do you swear a lot and put people down?
"A good man draws what is good from the store of goodness in his heart."

This is the behaviour that Jesus expects of his disciples. So, what I would like you to take away from these thoughts is that our words matter. Our words reveal our hearts. If we want the world and the Lord to see us as good people, then we have to be careful to speak like good people.

Words from Fr. Merv Duffy SM, spoken at a Mass in the SHC Chapel

Caritas Lenten Appeal

During Lent, New Zealand's Catholic Bishops invite us to provide for the needs of the poor through the work of Caritas. Money raised through the Bishops' Lent Appeal helps us to fund both development and emergency relief work around the world. The theme for 2022 is "Called to be Peacemakers".
Our Young Vinnies are managing the Caritas Lenten appeal. There are collection boxes in all Homerooms and at the tuckshop. Please remember to bring a donation to school. Students may like to do a chore or service at home to earn this donation.

Alternatively, donations can be deposited in the Sacred Heart College bank account: 03 0104 0914050 00. Please use the reference “Caritas 2022”

Rotation of Year Levels learning from home

This week we began rostering Year Levels home for a day due to the number of staff members needing to isolate due to COVID, reached our threshold. So far this has worked very well, and as communicated, it will continue through next week.
Designated days:
Monday
 - Year 12
Tuesday - Year 10
Wednesday - Year 11
Thursday - Year 9
Friday - Year 13
Should this arrangement need to be extended past Friday 18 March, we will let you know. Furthermore, if multiple Year Levels are to be rostered home on certain days, we will communicate this. Please note, we have not rostered Year 7 or Year 8 to learn from home at this point, however, this may change.

Google Classrooms while isolating

This is a reminder that if students need to isolate at home because of COVID, there is an expectation that they will keep up with the work being set by their teachers, through the Google Classrooms. If your son is unwell and therefore unable to complete the work, he will need to catch up on the work set once he has recovered. We must emphasize the importance of this so that he does not find himself behind the rest of the class when returning onsite.

Study Centre

Our Study Centre is open from 3.30 - 4.30pm Monday to Thursday, in S3 (a classroom next to the Library) and students are able to access the Library (until 4pm).
Each afternoon it is staffed by teachers, who are there to provide supervision and assistance where required. There are also senior students rostered on to provide academic support to students.
Students can work in the area that best suits their needs. It is open to all students from Year 7 through to Year 13; everyone is welcome.
Please note that it is for the purposes of completing work. Students who are not utilising the facility in this way will be asked to leave.

Read & Write Gold

This is a reminder that Read & Write Gold is available to all students at Sacred Heart College. This is a Literacy Toolbar for Google Chrome that provides personalised support, making documents more accessible. Click here to install the extension. To access all premium features, sign-in using your Sacred Heart College account.

Pastoral Care

Staying safe online

With a number of students learning online due to isolating or when their year levels are rostered home, now is a great time to remind parents and caregivers to be vigilant in monitoring their son's online profiles and presence. We ask parents to provide the following guidance:
  • Communicate with your son/s about their use of technology
  • Remind your son/s of online protocol
  • Monitor their online behaviour - know who they are talking to and what apps they are using
  • Maintain an acceptable level of screen time
  • Keep family and friends safe in the digital world.
Key points in this regard are to:
  • Activate security settings on social media sites
  • Only give personal information to people they know and trust
  • Use available online safety options (website blockers and email/spam filters)
  • Avoid sharing images of themselves
  • Report inappropriate behaviour.
You may also be aware of the recent dangerous videos depicting "blackout games" currently circulating on social media platforms such as TikTok and Snapchat. If we become aware of students engaging in this type of activity, we will contact home immediately. We all need to work together to ensure young people are not exposed to these types of ideas, and if they are, they are informed of the extreme dangers of this type of behaviour. For more information about this latest activity, read here

Cyber Safety and Online Resources

Switch on Safety

While students are learning from home they are away from the online safety and security services provided by Network for Learning (N4L) at school. So together with N4L and Netsafe, the Ministry of Education has launched Switchonsafety.co.nz - a free way to block the worst of the web for students and teachers. Please remember, no technical solution is a silver bullet. Please complement this with other tools and resources available.

Netsafe

Netsafe provides comprehensive support and information to support everyone to stay safe as they work, learn and play online. Netsafe has new and updated resources for parents and students on their website Netsafe.org.nz.

Health Centre and COVID updates

With the change in isolation period for COVID Positive Cases and Household Contacts moving from 10 to 7 days from midnight tonight, we would like to clarify the following. From 11.59pm Friday 11 March:
  • All cases and household contacts who are currently isolating can end their period of isolation after Day 7. Those currently in isolation will not have to complete their Days 8, 9 and 10 of isolation.
  • Anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19 will be required to isolate for seven days. Day 0 is the day symptoms began or the day the test was taken (whichever came first). Cases will isolate for a full seven days and are free to return to normal activities on Day 8, if they are not symptomatic.
  • Recovered cases will no longer need to isolate again if they become a household contact within 90 days of having the virus.
  • Household contacts are required to isolate for the same seven days as the case. They will be required to take a self-administered rapid antigen test (RAT) on Day 3 and Day 7 of the case’s isolation period. Household contacts can return to their normal activities on the same day as the first case in their household, so long as all test results have been negative, and they are not symptomatic.
  • If a household contact has finished their period of isolation they do not need to return to isolation if a new case is identified in their household. However, this only applies for a period of seven days following their leaving isolation.
  • Should a new household member be confirmed as a case eight or more days after the household contact has left isolation, then they must start a new period of self-isolation for seven days.

Stay home if symptomatic

Even if a Negative RAT test is completed, if your son has any symptoms, please keep him at home. He should only return to school when fully recovered with no active symptoms. It is important to know that even after 1 or 2 Negative RAT's, a person can return a Positive RAT result a day or two later, especially if they are still symptomatic. We appreciate these are difficult times, however our priority is to keep our students and staff safe.

Advertising in Confortare - Sacred Heart College Magazine

Confortare is the Sacred Heart College print and digital magazine that captures school achievements and memories for students, Old Boys and the wider SHC community. It is produced in mid-May and end of September each year. Significant events in the College and amongst our Old Boys are captured and reported both in text and images, while reflecting the Special Character of the College. The May edition covers events from October previous year through to April of the current year. The September edition typically covers from May to end of September. The high level of engagement from the community means it is consistently relevant, as Conforate is repeatedly referred to over the years. We print over 3,500 copies each edition, and the digital edition is sent to the College community and uploaded to the Sacred Heart website for the wider community to access.

An opportunity for advertising in this magazine has arisen. Please view our information on rates and ad specifications. Contact Anne Walbridge, Marketing and Communications Manager: communication@sacredheart.school.nz for more details.

Silent Auction 2022

In light of this year’s Fair rightfully being cancelled, we have decided nonetheless, to proceed with the auctioning off of some fabulous New Zealand baches! Historically, the income generated at the Fair’s Silent Auction stall for bach accommodation has been a huge part of our overall fundraising efforts. Hence, we are now looking for anyone in the school community who would like to kindly donate the use of their bach for a week or weekend.
The baches will be auctioned online in the coming months, in time for the July school holidays!
If you or any family or friends would be happy to donate the use of your bach towards this fundraiser, we would be most grateful!
(The PTA can cover the cost of the cleaning fee too!).

An update from the Auckland Transport Metro Bus Team

As Omicron spreads, many bus operators are experiencing staff shortages and service cancellations across bus, train, and ferry services. Although Auckland Transport is working hard to update cancellations in our systems, there may be some occasions when these are last-minute and can’t be communicated in time. We recommend checking service updates on the AT Mobile app, Live Departures, or on digital signs at stops and stations.
AT are trying their best to make school bus services a priority and run most school bus services to a regular timetable. However, they are expecting to see last-minute cancellations due to the spread of Omicron in the community. Although they're working hard to update cancellations in their systems, there may be some occasions when these are last-minute and can’t be communicated in time. If any of our bus services do not arrive on time, we will liaise with the students, and request them to find or use alternative transport options.
