Our Power is our Care, Our Power is our Presence!
Are you suffering from Compassion Fatigue? What can you do about it?

Our Director, Lola Bendana, recently participated on the panel "My Mental Health is Multilingual”;  below are some of the points shared during that discussion. We are also organizing a follow up conversation on Zoom on March 21, 10:00 - 12:00 EDT. This will be an interactive session. To register, visit Eventbrite

The topic is relevant to all of us and specially to those working in the helping professions; interpreters are among those professionals who could suffer Vicarious (secondary) Trauma while interpreting.

It is important to differentiate between Burnout and Compassion Fatigue, while Burnout is being worn out and tired, Compassion Fatigue is the PTSD related symptom that you receive vicariously as secondary to trauma.
  • Compassion Fatigue is experienced in the helping professions, more intensively by those with strong empathetic response.
  • Empathy puts people at a higher risk of compassion fatigue.
  • Compassion Fatigue can be identified and treated.
  • Vicarious Trauma has a negative impact on work performance and quality of life.
What can we do? What solutions are there to reduce the impact of Vicarious Trauma?

There is a need to cope effectively with stress and anxiety and the effects of VT,  Self- Care is of essence. There are 6 main areas of care*:

Cognitive
  • Be optimistic - have a positive mindset
  • Be aware - Acknowledge what you are experiencing, don't ignore your emotions
  • Get into the habit of writing things down
  • Get into the habit of reviewing previous successes
Behavioral
  • Do activities that you enjoy
  • Take time for emotional care
  • Get Grounded - connected to how you feel inside
 Physical
  • Ask: what does my body needs?
  • Learn proper Breathing techniques
  • Regulate your nervous system
  • Do aerobic exercise
  • Have routine sleep patterns
  • Eat a well balanced whole food diet
  • Drink water
  • Take mini -breaks
  • Consult with your doctor if you could benefit from taking supplements that may support your health and boost your immune system. i.e. Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Zinc, Omega 3, Magnesium, etc.
 Emotional
  • Identify and name the emotion
  • Give yourself permission to ask for help
 Spiritual
  • Practice Gratitude on a daily basis
  • Practice Meditation and/or prayer
  • Find spiritual support
 Interpersonal
  • Talk with a debrief partner
  • Take time to enjoy the company of a trusted friend

Some actions that need to be done by the larger community:
  • Raise awareness about the role and needs of the interpreter
  • Create a system that includes the interpreter as part of the provider team (healthcare team for example where they have equal access to debrief an mental health support system)
  • Create a system that considers vicarious trauma experienced by interpreters a serious matter and tools to deal with it are offered to interpreters.

On March 21st, we will chat about solutions to Compassion Fatigue and SELF-CARE. Join us! To register, visit Eventbrite
