CONSORTIUM UPDATES
Click here to watch the recording and download the chat from our January 30 workshop Exploring Classical Choral Music by Black Composers. Kudos to our presenter, Vinroy D. Brown, Jr. and panelists Ryan Brandau, Helen Vassallo Kernizan, and Matt Zabiegala. Aren't we lucky to have such knowledge and talent among us?

Dues are due! All members are invited to renew for 2022 — just $50 per chorus. Renew online with a credit card, or download our application form and mail it with your check. Our thanks to those members that already renewed; if you're not sure whether your chorus is among them, email us.
We'd like everyone in every member chorus to read our newsletter. To make that happen, we'd like every chorus to designate someone to share our newsletter with everyone else in the chorus. How? Whatever works for your chorus. Here are some options:
  • Forward this newsletter  to your chorus email list.
  • Post a message with a link to our newsletter archive in your chorus membership newsletter.
  • Post a message with a link to our newsletter archive on your chorus membership bulletin board or social media page.
  • Download a pdf of this newsletter from our membership portal to print, post, or attach to an email for your members.
Is there another way you'd like to share our newsletter with your chorus? Can we help? Email us.
New members are welcome at any time. Your membership is valid for the calendar year. Everyone in an NJCC member chorus is automatically an NJCC member. Join online or print our application form to mail with your check. First-year organizational dues are half-price $25 instead of $50. Individual members who aren't in an NJCC member organization can join too; individual dues are $25 every year.
MEMBER MESSAGES
Somerset Hills Chorus invites you to sing with them this spring. Music in the Somerset Hills' own Somerset Hills Chorus will join forces with Downtown Voices in a riveting outdoor performance of Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana." Vinroy D. Brown, Jr., Artistic Director & Conductor of Capital Singers of Trenton, will conduct the Westminster Choir College Jubilee Singers at the Bent, But Not Broken music conference April 27-30 in Wilmington, DE. "The conference is comprised of performances from nationally esteemed choral groups complemented with workshops and interest sessions led by the nation's most knowledgeable scholars of music and history. Bent, But Not Broken aims to be the community and artistic summit that will make visible — and audible — the works of Black voices,” per Arreon Harley-Emerson, Director of Music & Operations, The Choir School of Delaware.

Rise Up Chorus presents Meet the Musicians, a podcast hosted by Matthew LaPine, Founder and Artistic Director, and occasional guest host Helen Kernizan, Rise Up Youth Chorus Director. Each episode is a conversation with an active musician, from local talent to world-famous names.

If your member chorus has a message you'd like to see in our newsletter,
post it on the Bulletin Board in our Chorus Connection membership portal, or email us.
DID YOU KNOW?
In January, Chorus Connection surveyed more than 900 choruses about their pandemic plans and concerns. We all have a lot in common. Read the results on their blog.

If your chorus is planning online concerts, the process of licensing the music rights is a whole lot more complicated than what you're used to for in-person concerts. An article from Chorus America explains it all.

Speaking of Chorus America, their 2022 conference will include both online and in-person versions. Online April 7-8, in-person June 15-17 in Baltimore, MD (within reach of NJ). Early-bird registration available until March 31. If you're ready to work on strengthening your chorus, this is the place to be.

Food for Thought: “Spirituals spoke to the community. Gospel speaks to one person.” -- Horace Clarence Boyer, quoted by Vinroy D. Brown, Jr.

We like to share opportunities and news of interest to choral music lovers in NJ. If you have something you'd like us to share in our newsletter, post it on the Bulletin Board in our Chorus Connection membership portal, or email us.

Monmouth Civic Chorus - Las Americas: Music from the Americas

If perhaps without the drama of a Capulet and Montague romance, we’ve all cared deeply enough for someone unlike us to make our differences less important than our friendship. ‘Diversity and inclusion’ may be our current political handles; but, to the extent that we can each think of someone we love who is different from us, can we talk?
Composers include Marques L.A. Garrett, Kyle Pederson, Chen Yi, Carlos Cordero, Craig Hella-Johnson, others This season’s series of three concerts aims to inspire and help smooth a pathway for mutually respectful conversation specifically between individuals and groups that find themselves at odds regarding approach to difficult issues. In this age of extreme ideological polarization, Ember will seek to highlight core human values upon which some agreement can be found, even within the volatile contexts of gun violence; diversity; and human-generated impact on health.
