Teaching Science through Song
By: Catalian Colbert

Ever tried  to help your students memorize those pesky science facts, like the order of the planets? They can get pretty complicated, and everyone ends up spending more time coming up with one than actually studying the material!

With the increasing popularity of TV shows such as The Big Bang Theory, students of today are exposed to more and more science-themed media that could potentially be used for teaching. How can a song reach kids more effectively than a page in a textbook or the classic ‘chalk and talk’ lesson? Let students create the songs. Your child will know how best to engage their own peers, so let them!

Here’s a look at what a science song-writing project for your students could involve:

  • They choose a tune that they enjoy.

  • Pick a topic of science or the science behind an issue or phenomenon that they find interesting.

  • Do their own research on the selected topic.

  • Write lyrics with the information that they have gathered about their chosen topic.

  • Record the song!

  • Those who are audio-visually inclined could even create or shoot a music video for their new hit single

What is Francophonie Day?
Well, it’s the name used to collectively describe all of the countries and people who share French as a common language. The day is organized every year by the International Organization of La Francophonie to promote the French language. It’s a perfect opportunity for you to visit exhibitions, watch films and read books in French, take part in writing workshops and discover traditional dishes from French-speaking countries.

Remember to check the website for important updates.  Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. My office hours are Monday- Friday 8:00am-4:00pm.

ArcGNO Mardi Gras Recycle Center Bead Drive!

All ISL campuses will be participating in the Arc of Greater New Orleans’ Mardi Gras Recycle Center Bead Drive! All you have to do is bring as many Mardi Gras throws (beads, plush, toys, balls, etc.) to your campus and our school will be competing against other schools in the Greater New Orleans area to win a pizza or doughnut party provided by ArcGNO.

ArcGNO will weigh each school’s collected throws and divide the number by how many students attend that particular school to determine the school winner.

BE ON THE LOOKOUT! More details to follow, including when you can bring your throws to the campus.

What is ArcGNO?

Arc of Greater New Orleans (ArcGNO) is a 67-year-old non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the independence and well-being of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities such as Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and autism.

In addition to reducing the Mardi Gras waste put in our landfills, their staff currently support over 600 individuals throughout Jefferson, Orleans, St. Bernard, Plaquemines and St. Tammany parishes and spend all year sorting and packaging donated beads. Beads are then bought by float riders for the following parade season and the proceeds from the sales allow Arc to pay a federal minimum wage to all employees – some of whom may not otherwise have an opportunity to earn a living and contribute to their families. ArcGNO assists parents to find effective therapies and treatments and help students explore options for their future after high school.

Yearbook Orders
Place your order for the 2021-2022 yearbook. Order forms were sent home prior to Mardi Gras break. The deadline is April 10th. All checks must be made out to ISL. Cost is $22

Mayor for a Day 2022

Please share this AMAZING opportunity with your child! We would love to see one of our ISL students serve as Mayor of New Orleans, again! We were so excited to see ISL represented in the 2019 Mayors. How wonderful would it be to have one of our very own students experience being Mayor for the Day in 2022.

The Office of Youth and Families launched the 2022 Mayor for a Day essay contest. This program aims to foster and encourage leadership in young people living in New Orleans. Applicants are invited to write essays about what they would do to make New Orleans better and how. Three winners will be chosen from three age categories. Each winner will be sworn in as Deputy Mayor and will have a chance to shadow the Mayor for the day. All youth, ages 11-18, who live in Orleans Parish are eligible to apply.
