Tech Tuesday: Teaching, Learning + Hiring!

Hello and Happy Tech Tuesday! Here’s what’s going on in our world!

Special days, events, and more on our diversity and inclusion calendar:

✊🏾 March 15th was Equal Pay Day! Over the past week, we have heard COUNTLESS stories from women about the moment they found out they were being paid less than their male colleague though they were doing the same job, had more experience or a higher level of education. We are happy that women are telling their stories and sharing their truths.

For 2022, the Equal Pay Day coalition has adopted a new, more inclusive calendar to call out the gender pay gap for women of color:

  • May 3 | Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Women’s Equal Pay Day. Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander women are paid 75 cents for every dollar paid to white men.

  • September 21 | Black Women’s Equal Pay Day. Black women are paid 58 cents for every dollar paid to white men.

  • November 30 | Native Women’s Equal Pay Day. Native women are paid 50 cents for every dollar paid to white men.

  • December 8 | Latina’s Equal Pay Day. Latinas are paid 49 cents for every dollar paid to white men.

Want to learn how to negotiate for a new job, raise or promotion, PLUS gain the confidence to do so?! If so, we have just want you need:

📚 AAUW has a free digital salary negotiation workshop, “Work Smart and Start Smart: Salary Negotiation”, to empower you to secure the income you deserve AND desire!

🙋🏾‍♀️ Need insight on how to make sure you’re being paid fairly? Check out Shanae’s feature in The New York Times, where she discusses salary negotiations in tech and business. Read What Do You Think You Should Be Paid? for the details (paywall).

Take a look at what Nerdy Diva and its Founder are up to:

👩🏾‍🏫 On March 1st, Nerdy Diva presented a two-hour workshop and panel focused on building ethical and accessible tech for Camelback Ventures’ 2022 cohort of Conscious Tech Fellows. Click the link to grab the deck and resources from the session, titled Designing Anti-Racism Into Your Products.

🎺 Camelback Ventures is an organization based in New Orleans, with underrepresented founders located across the U.S., from New York to Denver, New Orleans, and more. One of the fellows even tuned in from Mardi Gras in NOLA!

📱One of the businesses from the Cohort that participated in the workshop was Reyets, an app and “social justice network created to end police violence and protect your rights.”

🙏🏾 Special thanks to Selam Kebrom, who attended the Nerdy Diva Workshop at Lesbians Who Tech's Debug Summit in December 2021 and reached out to bring the workshop to the Conscious Tech Fellows at Camelback Ventures!

🎉 It’s still Women’s History Month, though we celebrate women 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year! To wrap WHM, we’d like to share the conversation Shanae had with Mollie Amburgey of The Casually Mollie Podcast.

They discuss her career in technology, being an adjunct professor, her passion to make life easier for others through her designs, and how being a creative works hand in hand with her everyday life.
