KIA ORA FROM OUR NEW MANAGER

Ko Pārengarenga tōku moana
Ko Tawhitirahi tōku maunga
Ko Te Awapoka tōku awa
Ko Te Kao tōku kāinga
Ko Pōtahi tōku marae
Ko Māmari tōku waka
Ko Te Aupōuri, ko Ngāpuhi nui tonu ōku iwi
Ko Te Whānau Pani tōku hapū
Ko Wiki tōku whānau
Ko Gwenda rāua ko Malcolm ōku mātua
Ko Tim Kendrew ahau
My family comes from Te Kao in the Far North and Christchurch, but I was born and raised here in Palmy. I moved to Wellington to study History and Māori Studies at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University and lived there for 10 years, returning to Te Papaioea in 2019 and joining the team at CSC.

I am excited to be stepping in to the role of Kaiwhakahaere Matua / Manager here at CSC, and for all the new challenges that will bring with it. I look forward to continuing to build on our capability and capacity building programmes, supporting and advising community groups, fostering connection and collaboration across the sector, and advocating for the needs of our community and community groups. Nō reira, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa.

With me stepping into my new role, we are now recruiting a Kairuruku Kaupapa / Programme Coordinator and Kaiāwhina / Administrator to complete our team – both of the roles can be viewed on Seek and we would appreciate you sharing them far and wide!

Emma is staying with us until 31 March, but I want to acknowledge her passion and dedication to PNCSC and the community sector more generally over the past four years. In particular, her steady leadership and good humour as we navigate the complexities of working through a worldwide pandemic, while still delivering our core work, looking after HCH, and developing new programmes and services. I know Emma plans to continue her involvement in the community sector, so I am sure we will all see her around. We wish you all the best Emma!

This newsletter is a bit shorter than usual, which I think reflects the fact that many of you, like us, are unable to deliver services or events in our normal ways—or even to make concrete plans for the next few months. Even two years into the pandemic, it feels like we are facing the unknown. A gentle reminder not to stress about the things you can’t control, and let’s keep working together to support our communities! Please reach out to me if CSC can support your organisation in any way.
Noho ora mai,
Tim

PNCSC members' meeting dates for 2022 are 12pm on Thursdays 7 April, 9 June, 11 August, 20 October, and 8 December.

The next Flax Pānui will go out on 8 April. Notices are due by Thursday 7 April.
Kia ora koutou,

This year is an election year for local government, and I want to encourage you to start thinking if you, or someone you know, would be interested in standing for the City Council or Regional Council in October. Councils work well when people from the whole community feel represented, and I’d love to see the next wave of community-minded candidates popping up! If you’ve got any questions feel free to get in touch.

This week in Committee of Council we prepared the first draft of the Annual Budget for 2022-23 after two days of debate. This will be confirmed on 16th March and will go out for consultation shortly afterwards. It is based on year 2 of the 10 year plan. The head winds of Covid have certainly affected Council and there are a number of challenges that we are facing in planning and delivery of projects and services. In addition the new land valuations have a disproportionate impact on residential rate payers that we have tried to reduce. Do read the consultation document and supporting material for more detail once it is available.

Next Wednesday March 9th at 1pm is the Community Development Committee meeting. We will be getting a report back on the night shelter proposal and hearing the annual report on the Welcoming Communities programme. There will also be two presentations from members of the public.

I’d like to congratulate Tim Kendrew on his appointment as manager of PNCSC and thank Emma Ochei for her hard work and dedication to the community as the outgoing manager.

Ngā mihi nui,

We have now moved into phase three of the Government’s Omicron response, with daily case numbers now in the thousands.

In this phase, only confirmed cases and their household contacts are required to isolate – all other contacts are now asked to monitor for symptoms of Covid-19, but do not have to isolate.  Rapid Antigen Tests will also become the primary form of testing in the community, and will be available at thousands of sites around the country, including at pharmacies and GP practices.

Boosters remain the best way to protect against Omicron, and if you’re 18 or over and had your second dose at least three months ago, you can get your booster now – visit a walk-in clinic or book an appointment at bookmyvaccine.nz.   Parents and caregivers can now also protect their children aged 5-11 with the paediatric vaccine.

Take care and keep safe during this time.

Join the call for free fares
60+ organisations around Aotearoa have teamed up to support the Free Fares campaign. Together we are calling on Transport Minister Michael Wood to make public transport FREE for all under-25s, tertiary students and Community Service Card holders, so that more people can afford climate-friendly options. Everyone should be able to afford public transport, but the high cost leaves many people reliant on private cars or disconnected from their community. Free fares is part of the solution!  Sign the petition here

Cancer Society Manawatū
Relay for Life still has legs! Introducing
Relay Your Way!
When you want, with who you want, and where you want! Relay is pushing on. We’ll walk apart, but not alone.

As Covid continues to ruin all of our best-laid plans, we've created an alternative to our traditional Relay for Life  which provides an opportunity for teams in our local community to get together and host their own event to celebrate and remember those with cancer, while also supporting Manawatu Cancer Society.

Relay for Life is Manawatu Cancer Society’s biggest annual fundraiser. The funds we raise each year are vital for us to continue to support those with cancer and their whanau in our community.

Register online here or email Hannah O'Neill

Small steps can make a remarkable difference for people affected by cancer in our community. Relay Your Way this March and run, walk or even dance laps and fundraise.  Anyone can get involved, so rally your friends, whanau, classmates and workmates and join your community in the fight against cancer.
How will you relay?

Citizens Advice Bureau
Renters' Rights Awareness Week 2022

Monday 14 March to Sunday 20 March 2022

Amidst the trials of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen ongoing enquiries from renters facing tough and trying times. Tenants and renters have had issues with the poor state of housing, high rents, lack of housing, disputes with landlords, maintaining relationships with flatmates, isolating when sick in times of COVID, and much more.

We want to reach out to renters and inform them of their rights and let them know that the Citizens Advice Bureau is always there for them when it comes to valuable confidential information and advice. This is also an opportunity to promote the Aratohu Tenant Advocacy a comprehensive online resource developed by CABNZ that provides support and guidance to tenants and their advocates.

Te Roopu Oranga o Highbury Trust
Te Whare Koha Highbury

Our community is struggling, families are going through hard times. It's hard to look to the future, so we do our best to provide what our communities need today to help them get to tomorrow.
  • Today our community needs clothes.
  • Today our community needs to use a phone.
  • Today our communities need food.
  • Today our community needs transport to get to medical appointments.
  • Today someone needs help navigating through the system.
We're in desperate need of volunteers who can spare a morning a week sorting donations of food and clothing. We're also looking for a fully vaccinated van driver with a full license who can be available one day a week to use our van to take people to medical appointments, social wellbeing appointments, the pharmacy, MSD, food banks etc.

We also need more food to support our community's growing need. If anyone is clearing out their cupboards, knows someone who owns a food service that isn't sure what to do with their leftovers or has an overflow in their organisation it would be so appreciated if they could drop any food items off to us during our opening hours.

If you or someone you know can help please get in contact with Jody through Facebook, text or phone 0275439663, or email.

Environment Network Manawatū (ENM)

You are encouraged to find out more about the funding by clicking on this link where you can access guidelines, FAQ’s and information.

ENM administers the Environmental Initiatives Fund to support Palmerston North-based community initiatives that improve environmental outcomes. The fund is financed by PNCC and was made possible through a Strategic Priority Grant. Small Grants (up to $1000, open year round) and Large Grants (between $1,000 and $12,000) are available for projects that align with PNCC’s Eco-City Strategy priorities and any identified priorities of ENM.

ENM is available now to answer questions from potential applicants; contact Kerry Jaques on 06 355 0126 or email.

ENM was proud to officially launch the Southern Ruahine Kiwi Habitat Restoration Project on 24 February at an event attended by over 60 members of the environmental and public sector communities. Attendees included local farmers, Department of Conservation staff, environmental volunteers, Federated Farmers representatives, project staff and elected representatives including the Chair of Horizons Regional Councils and media.

The event took place at the Pohangina DoC base 35 minutes from Ashhurst nestled at the base of the Ruahine Ranges. The launch was an important opportunity to talk to involved parties about the project and what it is, celebrate its beginnings and look forward to a future where kiwi are able to be reintroduced to the area by 2026.

The project is managed by ENM via a collaboration between Manawatū River Source to Sea and Te Kaūru Eastern Manawatū River Hapū Collective. The project is funded by the Department of Conservation Jobs for Nature initiative and aims to control predator pests in 13,000 ha of the Southern Ruahine Ranges, with the dream of returning Kiwi to the area by 2026. The project is delivered in alignment with neighbouring predator control projects in the area, presenting a fantastic opportunity to return a taonga species to a significant proportion of the Ruahine Ranges.

Digits Charitable Trust
Enabling digital access to our whānau in the Manawatū

Digits has had a surge of chromebook applications recently, with such high demand globally for devices sometimes it's hard for us to get regular stock. We are hoping to team up with local ReUse It for supply of devices which will be very helpful. With shortages we have been unable to also get a regular supply of laptop sleeves/covers. If there is anyone in the community who you know where we can source some locally at a cheap price or for sponsorship please let us know. We had been getting these from Just Laptops and Kmart for $5 and under but now there is no stock. We have also tried local Warehouse, Farmers, Typo, Cotton On and Ucol. Keep reading.

Palmerston North Street Van
2022 presents us with new expectations and challenges with the spread of Omicron all around the country. Many businesses and lives have been affected. For our volunteers at Street Van we really feel the bite on businesses of this unseen enemy.

There are very few pubs open nowadays because of the changes in closing time. With the postponement of many events in the Regent Theatre and Arena Manawatū, there are very few movements in The Square at nights. Yet those who need to fill their tummies still turn up on Saturday nights, still grateful for the food and for the conversation they have with our volunteers. On one occasion we gave a blanket to a lady sleeping in one of the empty buildings.

Our charity shops have been inundated with the amount of donations we received, and most of these items went to families who lost everything due to fire. Two boxes of shoes and clothes were given to Kohanga Reo.

As an organisation we are very grateful to our funders who continuously believe in what we do. Without their support we would not be able to continue. As member of the community, I am happy to see our city continue to care for its people. – Meriam Findlay.
