¡Hola Osxs!

Dear Chicanx Latinx Cal Alumni, Students, and Friends:

We are so happy to bring you campus and community updates in our April UCB CLAA newsletter.

As we are moving into April, we are getting ready for our annual UCB Chicanx Latinx graduation celebration, which will take place on Sunday, May 15, 2022, at 9:00am at the Greek Theatre. If you are in the Bay Area and can volunteer, please see the link in the newsletter to sign up.

And I hope you all sign up for the HSI/Latinx Thriving Town Hall meeting coming up this month, where some of our Cal alumni will be speaking about what it means to have a Latinx Thriving campus.

Also, I am sharing with all of you the wonderful event I attended this weekend for Honorable Cruz Reynoso (Cal Alumni) and the UCLA Chicanx Latinx Law Journal. One of our own Cal Alumni, Jessica Del Castillo, now in her second year in law school, coordinated such a memorable event. At the event, we also had Monterrey Supervisor Luis Alejo, another (Cal Alumni), speak about the personal and professional impact that Judge Cruz Reynoso had on his life.

It really matters what we do now as we pay forward. We cannot forget to remember and honor those whose shoulders we stand on. Legacy works en acción for generations to come.

Hope you enjoy this month's newsletter!

En Comunidad,
Lupe Gallegos-Diaz

Your gifts will help these students become scholars, leaders, and professionals while creating a sense of belonging and community engagement across the entire campus.

Kevin McCauley Outstanding Staff Award Recipient
The Council of UC Staff Assemblies (CUCSA) awarded the Kevin McCauley Outstanding Staff Award at UC Berkeley for 2021-2022 to Lupe Gallegos-Diaz!

The Award was created in 2015 as a memorial to Kevin McCauley, a long-time UC staff member who passed away in January of that same year. The Award is given to recognize UC staff who are supportive and inclusive of staff; encourage equity, diversity, and inclusion; are forward-thinking; and do not compromise quality of fellow staff, students, or faculty.

Lupe showed dedication and effectiveness when it came to:
  • Supporting Staff
  • Communicating with Staff
  • Commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Community
  • Supporting Local Staff
  • Supporting System-Wide Initiatives that Affect Staff
Anyone who has met Lupe knows that she is extremely deserving of this award. Throughout the years, Lupe has worked to help her community. She has been involved with many organizations that uplifted her community — some of which she co-founded. If she isn't helping students begin new seminars, she is helping staff connect. Lupe is always looking to work on new projects and loves what she does. UC Berkeley is lucky to have her.

Chancellor's Award for Advancing Institutional Excellence and Equity
The Chancellor's Award for Advancing Institutional Excellence and Equity (CAAIEE) has been presented to UC Berkeley faculty members for outstanding contributions in advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice (DEIBJ) – through their research, teaching, and public or university service.

This year's recipients were G. Cristina Mora, Professor of Sociology, and Amani Allen, Professor and Executive Associate Dean in the School of Public Health. Both of their work has transformed their fields, UC Berkeley, and the community.

After seeing a lack of representation at Berkeley during the mid-1990s, Professor Mora focused on bringing more attention to the Latinx community and their struggles. Her research and advocacy efforts have dealt with Hispanic/Latinx identity construction, panethnicity, immigration politics, racial politics, and trust in government, making her a trailblazer in the field of sociology. As a campus representative, Professor Mora has helped uplift the Latinx community through leadership roles in the Latinx Faculty Association, Latinx Research Center, Latinx and Democracy Cluster Hire process, and Berkeley's work toward becoming a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). She contributes to many other DEIBJ initiatives and brings a unique perspective to her role as director of Sociology's Berkeley Connect program and co-director of the Institute for Governmental Studies. Outside of the university, Professor Mora is an inspiring teacher, valued mentor, and role model to Berkeley students – especially those identifying as first-generation, Latinx, and other underrepresented backgrounds.

The reception honoring the 2021-2022 recipients of the CAAIEE will be
on Monday, April 18, 2022, from 5:00pm - 7:00pm at the Toll Room and Patio, Alumni House. RSVP here by April 11, 2022, or contact Cardis McKines-Jones at (510) 643-3249 or events1@berkeley.edu.

Distinguished Teaching Award Recipient
The Academic Senate’s Committee on Teaching has recognized Dr. Pablo Gonzalez as one of the five faculty members who will receive this year's Distinguished Teaching Award (DTA) for their inspiring and transformational teaching. A ceremony and reception will be held to honor this year's five award recipients and 2020's four award recipients.

Dr. Pablo Gonzalez is a Continuing Lecturer in Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies and Ethnic Studies. He has a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin and a BA in Chicano Studies from UC Berkeley (c/o 99). He was born in Berkeley and raised between Berkeley, Richmond, and San Pablo, California. Dr. Gonzalez is a first generation Chicano scholar-activist/anthropologist who studies the political and cultural resonance of social movements. He has taught introductory classes in Anthropology and Chicano Studies, as well as undergraduate and graduate topic seminars. He is also the recipient of the 2020 Chancellors Award for Public Service in Community-Engaged Teaching. Currently, he directs the Ethnic Studies Changemaker project.

The Distinguished Teaching Award is intended to recognize individual faculty for sustained performance of excellence in teaching. Their teaching is exemplary, keeping students engaged and curious, inspiring departmental colleagues, and making students aware of significant relationships between the academy and the world at large.

The ceremony will be held on Thursday, April 28, 2020, from 5:00pm - 7:00pm at the Pauley Ballroom, Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Union.

Alumni Engagement

Conexiones de CAL

Become a Mentor

We have established a new mentorship program, Conexiones de CAL, with campus partners. Its purpose is to serve Chicanx/Latinx-identifying students, many of whom are first-gen and/or low-income, and provide them with peer mentorship during their time here at Cal.

We are currently recruiting mentors for the program. Practitioners and other experts in the field are welcome! Mentors who can meet with our students a few times throughout the semester and over the summer as they work on projects would provide professional and educational advice to these students throughout the length of the mentorship.

If you are interested in being a mentor or know of other Cal Alums who are, please sign up!

SEEN Episode 2

Edward James Olmos invites Nick Barili to meet him at Bell Gardens Intermediate School to see firsthand how his Youth Cinema Project empowers students to tell their stories on film. Edward reflects on growing up in the cultural diversity of East L.A., his stints in baseball and rock n’ roll before he finally landed on acting, and the importance of collaboration and creative control. Find out what his roles in Zoot Suit and Stand and Deliver mean to him, as well as the larger culture, and why he regularly turns down work.
"Academy Seen" is a new series featuring Nick Barili that deep dives into the stories of artists with Latin American and Spanish roots exploring their craft, culture, and breaking down barriers in filmmaking.
