Fire Damages Eastside Elgin Home

600 Block of Lille

Elgin, IL – On Wednesday, March 02, 2022, just after 6:00 p.m., members of the Elgin Fire Department responded to the 600 block of Lillie St. for a report of a possible structure fire.

Responding fire companies found a two story home with flames showing from a first floor covered rear porch window and extending to the second floor. The first crew arrived on scene in just under four minutes.  Fire crews deployed two hand lines to extinguish the fire. The fire was brought under control in approximately twenty five minutes after the arrival of the Fire Department. The home suffered extensive damage to the first floor. Initial damage estimates are in excess of $80,000.

The home was occupied at the time of the fire. There were two civilian and one firefighter injuries due to the fire. None of the injuries were life threatening. The home was red-tagged as it is uninhabitable and Code Enforcement was notified for follow-up. Initial indications show the fire may have been caused by a space heater too close to combustibles, the Elgin Fire Department Fire Investigation Team is investigating.

A Tip from Chief Cagann:

Space heaters need space. Remember to provide adequate room around any heating appliance and keep children away from them. Heaters may not look hot but can cause severe burns to curious little hands.
