FCT/European University FilmEU PhD Scholarship Programme - Open Call

In the context of the FCT’s support program to the consolidation of FilmEU European University, one of the 41 new European Universities supported by the European Commission, we are opening 5 scholarship positions for the PhD Media Arts and for the PhD Communication Sciences. Cicant will be the research centre to host these fellows.

CICANT has opened a competition to fill three positions of Assistant Researcher under the scope of the Scientific Employment Incentive Tender won by the instituting entity of Lusófona University.

CICANT launched  ObsMeL the Observatory for the Media in Lusophony,  a space for the analysis and study of relevant activity regarding the mass media, disinformation and fact checking methodologies in the CPLP member countries.

New Institucional Memberships

Meeting the requests of several of our researchers, we begin the year 2022 with two new institutional affiliations. 

With this initiative we seek to continue to foster the impetus of internationalization of our team of researchers and to solidify a network of international synergies of great importance for the development of our objectives.

Lusófona adopts Gender and Diversity Plan for
Grupo Lusófona Higher Educational Institutions. 


The CICANT team was strongly involved in the preparation of the adopted plan, and some dissemination and training initiatives for different members of the teaching community are planned for the near future.

CICANT playtesting event with APPACDM Lx

On 03/03/2022, CICANT researchers José Carlos Neves and Carla Sousa organized a playtesting activity, on the scope of the Bachelor’s Degree in Videogames. During the morning, several playtesting activities were developed, to sustain new game concepts.

CICANT welcomes New Integrated Researchers

Paula Lobo completed her PhD in Communication Sciences, branch of Communication Psychology, at the University of Minho in 2011 and her main research themes are public space, gender, citizenship and media literacy.

Lurdes Macedo has PhD in Communication Sciences from the University of Minho, since 2013, she is an Assistant Professor at Universidade Lusófona Porto, where she teaches in the area of Public Relations. She was a member of the research team of the project "Identity narratives and social memory: the (re)construction of Lusophony in intercultural contexts" (CECS - UM), co-editor of the International Yearbook of Lusophone Communication, in 2010 and 2011, and of the e-book Interfaces da Lusofonia, in 2014.

CALL FOR SUBMISSION - best practices on diversity in film and media 

With the Erasmus+ project future.film.education - Online Teaching and Diversity in European Film Schools, partners have joined forces to create freely accessible toolkits to assist film & media schools as well as teachers towards a more inclusive and diverse education. Please share your experiences, didactical concepts, exercises, methods and best practices for promoting, teaching and practicing diversity in the following template.

The kick off meeting of the project YouNDigital - Youth, News and Digital Citizenship, funded under the FCT call for projects in all scientific domains took place last 15 February via zoom.  Keep up with the project here.



To be or not to be active: “Calça os Tênis Cinderela” and take arms against sedentarism with the co-created communication campaign LusofonAtiva. Watch the video of the project campaign here and for additional fun activate youtube subtitles and make it a karaoke session for friends and families.




RestART Europe is a forward-thinking European initiative with a team of partners, led by the FH Münster University of Applied Sciences (Germany), with University of Naples Federico II (Italy), Lusofona University (Portugal), Friesland College (the Netherlands), and Accreditation Council for Entrepreneurial and Engaged Universities (Germany), passionate about supporting female entrepreneurship and mentorship in the arts and creative sector.   • Ana Jorge is the first author of the scientific article ‘Time well spent’: The ideology of dis/connection as a means for digital wellbeing, published by the International Journal of Communication. The article is available on open- access and you can read it on our Scientific Output pages or by clicking HERE.
  • Célia Quico, Anastasiya Maksymchuk, Lkhagvadulam Purev-Ochir, Possidónio Cachapa were accepted to be presenters in ELIA Biennial Conference Helsinki in November 2022. The team presentation will be focusing on the communication campaign created by and with the university faculty and students for the LusófonAtiva project. Check out the presentation teaser.
  • Sofia Caldeira is speaking at the upcoming conference ‘Emerging femininities and masculinities in 21st c. media and popular culture with the paper #VermelhoEmBelem: Conflicted femininities in the context of a Portuguese feminist hashtag campaign.

INTRODUCING CICANT

CICANT – The Centre for Research in Applied Communication, Culture, and New Technologies results from the combined efforts of faculty of the  School of Communication, Architecture, Arts and Information Technologies (ECATI) of Lusófona University towards the goal of creating a unit which allows for the integration and harnessing of the research activities conducted within it.

Our Research


This unit promotes theoretical and applied research on all its subject areas, particularly focusing on knowledge transfer and exchange with industry and similar centres in Portugal and in Europe. CICANT aims to bring together theoretical and applied research on technology, society and contemporary subjectivity. Futher, one of primary goals is to create a common space that can nourish interdisciplinary research between the arts, social sciences and information technologies.
