March 2022 Mobility Division Update

Happy Spring! Here is your March 2022 City of Somerville, Mobility Division Email Update.

  1. Visit the new Union Square Station on the MBTA Green Line.
  2. Take the Western Washington Mobility Improvements Survey to share your thoughts on future options for the street.
  3. Take the Bicycle Network Plan Survey to share your current biking patterns and priorities to guide future network planning.
  4. Join us for the Bicycle Network Plan Workshop for Parents.
  5. Take the Highland Ave Redesign Survey to share how you use the street today and what you want to see in the future.

The new Green Line Union Square Station opens March 21, 2022

Effective Monday, March 21, 2022, the Union Square Branch of the Green Line Extension (GLX) will open to MBTA riders. Union Square Station will join the Green Line, and Lechmere and Science Park/West End Stations, which were closed during construction, will reopen. The GLX Medford/Tufts Branch is expected to open later this summer. 

Western Washington Mobility Improvements Future Options Survey

TAKE THE SURVEY
The City of Somerville is planning to reconstruct sidewalks and repave Washington Street from Webster Avenue to Line Street. As part of this effort, the City will seek opportunities to improve the street for people walking, taking the bus, or riding bikes.

City staff presented a potential scope, evaluation of the Quick-Build Pilot, and future options at the community meeting on March 1, 2022We now want to hear from you!

Please let us know your feedback on how we can improve the street for people walking, taking the bus, or riding bikes. The survey is available in EnglishEspañolPortuguesKreyòl Ayisyenनेपाली.

The survey deadline is Monday, March 28, 2022.

Somerville Bicycle Network Plan Survey

Somerville Bicycle Network Plan Mapping Workshops

REGISTER
We are wrapping up a series of virtual Bicycle Network Planning workshops held throughout February and March. We have one more workshop on Saturday, March 19, 11:00 am - 12:30 pm specifically for parents.

The workshops include a brief project overview and an interactive mapping exercise where we talk through a variety of scenarios together to draw routes. This exercise focuses on opportunities for the future and design for connectivity through the entire city.

Highland Ave Redesign Survey

TAKE THE SURVEY
The City is reconstructing the street to create an improved Highland Ave with pedestrian safety measures, MBTA bus improvements, and protected bicycle lanes. To reach this vision, City staff are looking at how to more efficiently use curb space to make it safer and easier for people traveling Highland Ave by any mode. We also want to learn more about how people use the street today and improvements they would like to see. 

The City presented information about the scope and opportunities at a virtual community meeting on November 17, 2021. Check out the presentation slides and recording to learn more.

We want to hear from you! Please take the Highland Ave Redesign Survey. The survey is available in English, Español, Portugues, Kreyòl Ayisyen, नेपाली.

The information you share will help the City prioritize improvements and develop design concepts for the street.

The survey deadline is Monday, May 16, 2022.
