SPOTLIGHT

The Emerging Stories of Perinatal Behavioral Health in Kansas:

What stories can our perinatal screening and intervention data begin to tell us about the practice landscape in Kansas and the care perinatal families are receiving? As we enter our fourth year of this specific grant (though improving perinatal outcomes has been a priority for many stakeholders in our state for a number of years), we are excited to share emerging data and celebrate the work being done by numerous partners and providers engaged in this work. Take a look at some numbers from our work with providers over the last year:

  • 348 KS providers engaged in a perinatal behavioral health training event.

  • 32 providers received direct technical assistance from our expert team and 49 providers participated in quality improvement initiatives at their organizations.

  • 24 providers received help via the Perinatal Behavioral Health Consultation Line.

  • 796 total perinatal individuals screened for PMADs/SUD by providers enrolled in the KCC program, including 533 individuals living in rural/underserved areas, with 97% percent of those individuals who screened positive also receiving a referral to treatment.

The aim of the Kansas Connecting Communities (KCC) program is to improve perinatal health outcomes by supporting providers establish and improve screening and referral processes as well as access to training and other evidence-based best practice resources. These numbers demonstrate the scale and scope of the practice transformation taking place in our state. We will continue to offer training and technical assistance as well as to support providers engaged in perinatal behavioral health screening and interventions. We encourage you to utilize available resources and celebrate the progress that is being made in our state!

Peer Support Corner:

This section will provide an ongoing space to discuss and identify opportunities to integrate peer support into your practice and referral networks. Peer support is a process where those with a similar lived experience (like becoming pregnant or experiencing a mental health concern) can work together to support each other. Peer support can be a wonderful and accessible compliment to other therapeutic interventions.

Do you have a peer support group in your community? Interested in starting a perinatal peer support group but not sure how to start? Our KCC partners at WSU's Community Engagement Institute (CEI) manage the supportgroupsinkansas.org website and have also developed a Perinatal Support Group Guidebook to help organizations and individuals wanting to start or amplify their group's impact.

Connect with us at the upcoming Governor's Public Health Conference and Center for Research for Infant Birth and Survival (CRIBS) 2022 Symposium to learn more about the guidebook and local work happening to establish perinatal peer support opportunities. More to come!
