GLC e-news - Weekly each Friday
View this email in your browser

Dear GLC members and friends,

In worship this Sunday, now in the season of Lent, you'll notice some shifts intended to draw you into deeper reflection or learning. There are margin notes in the bulletin to explain different parts of worship and the scripture readings, which will change through the season. Our worship language and tunes shift with the season, and together we'll take time to reflect on what it means to be right "here" - wherever you find yourself - and find God there too.
I hope to see you Wednesday evenings at 7:30pm on Zoom for evening prayer each week with a focus topic and conversation between me and a member or guest. See below for more on that, as well as daily devotions you can receive, and check out all our Lent resources and inspiration at glconline.net/lent.

We're reviving the prayer and sharing page!  The password is: churchtogether.  Let's use it as a place to share - check in on it, share your updates, and whatever comes to mind.  Check out a few current updates there.

We're in-person for worship (8:30 & 10am) Sunday, and continuing the 10:00 livestream!  Please note that for in-person worship the following is required:

  • RSVP here for each service you plan to attend in-person
  • bring your vaccination card (or clear picture) for proof that you are up-to-date on covid-19 vaccination, including booster if eligible.
  • wear a high quality (K)N-95 or equivalent mask to worship. If you do not have one, it will be provided to you at the door.

Workday this Saturday!

All hands on deck! You are invited to help us with a work day at GLC, this Saturday, 3/5, starting at 9:30am. If you can spare even one hour, it'd be a great help! We'll have inside and outside projects, and this will be a rain or shine event. We had mulch delivered and need to spread it, plus organizing, cleaning, sanctuary care, etc. Putting in the time together helps us care for our shared church, and also have some fun and get to know others.
If you have a project/repair idea, please share it with our property committee - and we'd especially love your help in getting it done.
We'll have coffee and some treats - all are welcome! Bring gloves, a shovel, or wheelbarrow if you have them - but most importantly, bring you!

You are here. This Lenten season join us in daily devotions - pick up a paper copy at church, or subscribe via the link below to receive a daily email devotion to reflect, pray, and connect, finding God right where you are. Sign up here: http://eepurl.com/hUqh41

Prayer Request from Ukrainian Lutherans & How to Help

If you're on Facebook, you can follow the Lutheran Church in Ukraine (German Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ukraine) here to receive updates and hold them in prayer, or their English website is here. On their FB page Bishop Shvarts shared in a video a version of this post and request for prayers for peace, a just peace, and for the people of Ukraine.

If you feel called to give in support, there are so many worthy ways to help in this crisis. We'll add one here: Lutheran World Relief - you can give here, or learn more about LWR's efforts here.

Organ Recital March 20!

Organist Stephen Ackert, who has filled in on our organ bench many times, kicks off and is hosting a series of organ/instrumental recitals at GLC!
Why? Because our beautiful organ is just about as close as you can get to the type of organ Bach would have played and composed his series the Well-Tempered Clavier, which this year is 300 years old!  Stephen has planned an engaging and varied series of recitals - each one will be hosted at GLC as a benefit a non-profit.
This first one will benefit Afghan Refugees through LSSNCA.
Read more and find the ticket/event page link here.  Reserve your spot with a suggested donation and share with others and invite!

Order Easter flowers - by 3/21

Order flowers to adorn the church for Easter and then your home for friends and family to enjoy.  You can share them in honor or memory of someone special to you, and these will be printed and shared during Easter services.  Click here for the order form.

Updates, thanks to your support of our refugee family!

We moved in and started support of our "I" family the last weekend in January, and since then our core welcome team has been hard at work. Can you imagine coming as a family of five and trying to set up an entire life in a new place? This family who had for years been supporting US efforts in Afghanistan, now are eager to make a new life here and contribute as part of our community.  The mom in the family recently said, "I finally feel like I'm starting to relax, because we have friends like you."

Here are some of the things that we've been helping with and steps forward the family has taken:
  • the two older kids started school, learning English, and eager to learn and make friends (we helped with school registration & appointments)
  • the mom in the family is registered for ESL classes that begin later in March
  • the dad passed his learner's permit test and will be starting driving lessons
  • the family received TANF support which will help with rent and qualify the youngest for Headstart care in the fall
  • welcome team orienting the family to public transit, the library, and much more
Your gifts - of dollars and donations are so appreciated - lately they've gone to:
  • groceries
  • ESL books
  • clothing and essentials
  • donated items are well-loved: donated books and math flashcards are proudly shown by the kids, who now want to count to 100 in English for you!
Interested in helping?  Contact team leader, Jackie Hibbard Eramya, jlhibb@umich.edu - or give in support anytime at georgetownlutheran.com/donate - select "Afghanistan Refugee Support."
Calling your recipes: GLC Covid Cookbook

GLC is a congregation that is great at caring for others through food. Whether cooking for ourselves, our friends and family, each other, or our wider community, we love sharing through this basic, human gift.

We'd like to share this gift in a new way by collecting those recipes most dear to the members of GLC. We're starting a cookbook recipe drive and would like submissions of recipes in two broad categories: Those dishes that sustain you through tough times and those recipes you share with groups in times of celebration. This "COVID Cookbook" would be an anthology of beloved GLC foods that have kept us going when we've been cooking for ourselves and those things we'd love to have been cooking for others.

Please submit your recipes via this google form for inclusion.
