Computer Science: Instructor-led Option

As mentioned previously, we will be launching an instructor-led offering of the Art of Computer Science, where schools can enroll their students in a self-paced course that meets the requirements of House File 2629.  The course will be available in two different semesters (semester 1 and semester 2, or a full-year course) starting August 1 of 2022, though with the flex-start, your students can start any time they would like, even mid-semester.

New Items

• Registration will open up a month from now, and will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.  We will be reaching out to the districts that have completed the interest form first (see below).

• With the growing interest, we are looking into adding additional course instructors to meet the potential demand, but we can't guarantee that additional instructors will be ready to go right on August 1.  If we are over our cap at the beginning of the year, it might be into the school year before we have an additional instructor, but we will eventually be able to accept all registrations.

• Our instructor has finalized the course content and is piloting the content with students this spring.  She has available both the first semester and second semester syllabus, as well the crosswalk of standards and the student assessment/feedback guide.  If you are interested in knowing more specifics about the course, please contact us.

Reminders

• If you haven't done so already, please express your interest and the potential number of students at  https://forms.gle/JAbyywwWzv4ynqdi7.

• Cost for the course in 2022-23 is $250/student per semester.

• The course content itself is available here, if you would like to provide your own instructor with the self-paced course content.

New Self-Paced Courses Coming

In an effort to provide more options for professional learning that are convenient for educators, we are committing to adding more self-paced course offerings over the next few months.  This includes:

• Coming May, we will be offering the Substitute Authorization course in a self-paced format for the first time.  While individuals can still take the substitute authorization online via Zoom or in person through their local AEA, for those who are unable to make that work within their schedule will be the new self-paced format.  More details coming next month.

OLLIE will be 100% self-paced come this summer.  Already, our Facilitation and Instructional Design courses are being offered right now in a self-paced format, and OLLIE 101, and the Assessment course will be soon joining them.  They are available on the open catalog, and as part of the cohort.  Teachers that would like to take part in the already-started cohort can do so at any time.  Just contact Evan Abbey to get started.

• Brand new is Wakelet in the Classroom, a 2-credit self-paced course that used to be taught in a facilitated format.  Save, organize and present multimedia content with your students, teachers and learning communities. Wakelet is a free tool that allows educators and students to tell stories, organize and remix online content via a digital curation platform. In this course you will learn how to use Wakelet, explore and develop lesson ideas, and discover how Wakelet can enhance your personal professional learning.  Register here.

Life Science for Elementary Teachers and Physical Science for Elementary Teachers are two separate 3-credit courses worth Drake Graduate credit.  Often a requirement for teachers coming in from out of state and having a deficiency with the BoEE, a self-paced format becomes more convenient than having to wait for the next course to start.  Your teachers can also take advantage of that convenience.

Authentic Learning Update: Professional Development for Teachers, and for Leaders

For Leaders

You asked, and we listened!

A reminder that AEA Learning Online is offering a new self-paced course that meets the requirement for Evaluator Approval.  You can join our Leading Authentic Learning course any time through the end of June.

The course centers on how to evaluate and coach teachers utilizing project-based learning and an authentic learning environment, which can be challenging to do given its non-traditional teaching format.  The course pulls together examples from authentic classrooms across the state, as well as the perspectives of leading administrators in the practice.

Register here.

For Teachers

A great professional learning opportunity to help teachers better implement authentic learning in the classroom is to learn about the principles of Agile Scrum, a strategy used in business and across project teams worldwide.  Our Agile | Scrum site has self-paced professional learning resources for you.

Looking for more hands-on professional learning for your staff?  Our 2-day Scrum Playbook training is coming to an AEA near you.  Fill out this form to let us know of your interest in Agile Scrum training for your school.
