     Ukrainian Prayers and Support

Churches across the county are continuing to pray for and support those caught up in the crisis in Ukraine, following the Russian invasion.

Ash Wednesday was a dedicated day of prayer for those affected by the ongoing war and a silent vigil in Carlisle city centre was attended by nearly 200 people on Sunday night.

Amongst particular church support, 40 people attended a vigil at Christ Church Cockermouth and help, support and prayers have been offered to a Ukrainian lady whose husband attends Ulverston Parish Church. At 12 noon yesterday (Thursday 3 March) Carlisle Cathedral rang their bells for seven minutes, one minute for each day since the start of war in Ukraine. At the Sunday Eucharist Service members of the Cathedral's Girl Choristers and Lay Clerk will also sing an Eastern Orthodox chant.

Meanwhile, the Western Dales Mission Community are asking people to drop off baby blankets, fleece blankets, socks (all ages), new baby bottles, baby comforters, hats, scarfs, glove sets, sanitary wear, bandages, baby food pouches, baby/children's toiletries, towels/flannels, baby milk (powdered), nappies and baby wipes at St Andrew's Sedbergh. The church is open 8am to 6pm with the items being taken to Penrith on 7 March. Similar goods are also being collected at St Bees Priory for onward transit to Poland.

And the Rev Jonny Gios is arranging for a Vigil for Ukraine to be held at the summit of Great Gable on Saturday 12 March at 12 noon.

We have also had approaches about where church fundraising can be channelled and would direct people to the Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal to which the Diocesan Disaster Emergency Fund is looking to donate £1.000.

Other appeals include the Christian Aid Ukraine Crisis Appeal, the UNICEF Crisis Appeal, the British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal and Operation Mobilisation

    APCM - Resources and Support

A letter has been circulated to all PCC secretaries and incumbents pointing them towards new resources, support and advice offered up for forthcoming Annual Parochial Church Meetings.

The resources include a template agenda, electoral roll certificate, certificate of churchwardens and check list.

Please note that the Church Representation Rules 2020 state that all APCMs should be completed by 31 May, 2022. There is no extension in place this year so all APCMs must be completed by this date.  A Bishop’s Instrument is in place to allow APCMs (along with other meetings) to be held virtually, using video or phone technology, or a mixture of face to face and virtually.  Please follow whatever current guidelines are, at the time of meeting, on Covid safe numbers and hygiene regime. Please note that under M4 of the updated Church Representation rules, the Chair of the meeting does not have to be the minister, it can be a person appointed by the meeting, who could be lay.

Reimagining Care - Feedback

In 2021 the Archbishop of Canterbury initiated a Commission on Reimagining Care, of which Bishop James is co-chair.

The Commission aims to develop a radical and inspiring long-term vision for care and support underpinned by a renewed set of values and principles, drawing on Christian theology and ethics.

As part of the work of the Commission, the Diocese of Carlisle has been asked to provide examples for the ways in which church and faith communities are providing support and care, focusing on people in later life and adults with disabilities.

We are interested in examples from all denominations and faith traditions. For further information please contact Jo Philips and please note that submissions must be made by Tuesday 22 March, 2022.
