The Board of the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology has just appointed the professors who will reinforce the competences of the EPFL in the coming months. We are pleased to present below the movements within the School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Ianina Altschuler (PATT)

Dr Ianina Altshuler, currently Postdoctoral Fellow at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Norway, was appointed as Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Environmental Engineering.
Ianina Altshuler’s research is concerned with the environmental adaptation strategies of microorganisms in the cryosphere in alpine and polar regions, with particular reference to global warming and ever-increasing temperature fluctuations. At EPFL she will develop her research further in order to make an important contribution to our understanding of ecological adaptation strategies in hostile environments. Her appointment will enhance the School’s scientific influence and educational provision.

Pier Vittorio Aureli (PA)

Professor Pier Vittorio Aureli, currently Professor in Practice at Yale University, USA, Visiting Professor at EPFL and Co-Director of an architecture practice in Brussels, Belgium, was appointed as Associate Professor of Architecture.
Pier Vittorio Aureli’s research explores the principles of architectural theory in the light of the latest social and political conditions, and examines the role of theory and its influence on architectural and environment-related design methods. Pier Vittorio Aureli is currently regarded as one of the world’s most influential practitioners in the area of architectural and environmental theory. In making this appointment, the School and EPFL are seizing a unique opportunity to become indisputable leaders in this vital research field.

Sara Bonetti (PATT)

Dr Sara Bonetti, currently Assistant Professor at the University of Wageningen, Netherlands, was appointed as Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Environmental Engineering.
Sara Bonetti investigates processes in soil surfaces, ecology and water on a variety of spatial and temporal scales. Her work combines hydrological and geomorphological processes in particular, enabling her to gain a quantitative understanding of soil erosion and the development of land surfaces. The appointment of this innovative researcher will promote cooperation with various institutions, including WSL, thus boosting the department’s influence in this important field of research.

Gabriele Manoli (PATT)
Start on 01.09.2022 | Lausanne | Sustainable Urban Systems and Climate Mitigation Strategies
Dr Gabriele Manoli, currently Lecturer at University College London, United Kingdom, was appointed as Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Architecture.
Gabriele Manoli studies water supplies, energy exchange and the carbon cycle in urban and suburban systems. His interdisciplinary approach unites environmental technology, infrastructure and urban planning. At EPFL he will principally investigate the current worldwide trend towards urban densification and the effects of altering the urban climate (e.g. through greening measures). His appointment will strengthen the role of the School and EPFL in a research field of vital importance to society.

David Ruggiero (PATT)

Dr David Ruggiero, currently Design Engineer at Read Jones Christoffersen Ltd. in Toronto, Canada, was appointed as Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering.
David Ruggiero’s research aims to achieve a better understanding of the behaviour of reinforced concrete structures and structural elements made from cementitious materials. His achievements include developing a new theoretical model, known as the General Crack Component Model, which can be applied to a broad range of cementitious materials. He now intends to concentrate his efforts on sustainable materials and extending the life of infrastructures, while also contributing to multidisciplinary projects at EPFL.

Alfredo Thiermann (PATT)

Dr Alfredo Thiermann, currently Lecturer at Harvard University, USA, was appointed as Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Architecture.
Alfredo Thiermann’s research takes place at the intersection between architecture and different media, from sound installations and film scenography to private houses, public buildings and large-scale infrastructures. Another of his particular research interests is the transition from the industrial to the digital age. Thanks to his cross-sectoral vision of architecture, this innovative researcher will make a key contribution to the School’s strategic clusters in the areas of digital infrastructures and cities as well as sustainable territories.

Rizlan Bernier-Latmani (PO)

Professor Rizlan Bernier-Latmani, currently Associate Professor at EPFL, as Full Professor of Environmental Microbiology.
Rizlan Bernier-Latmani’s research explores the biological degradation of toxic metals and radionuclides by microorganisms. In her field experiments she uses concepts and techniques drawn from a wide variety of disciplines, such as microbiology, molecular biology, analytical chemistry (including X-ray spectroscopy) and geochemistry. In 2017 she was awarded an ERC Consolidator Grant for her research. Rizlan Bernier-Latmani is a role model for women in science, and encouraging the advancement of women is one of the causes to which she is committed at EPFL.

Roberto Gargiani
Retired on 28.02.2022 | Lausanne | Theory and history of architecture
Roberto Gargiani, Full Professor and Director of the Laboratory of Theory and History of Architecture at ENAC since 2005, is Honorary professor since 1st March 2022.
Prof. Gargiani was the first candidate in all Europe in the field of architecture to win an ERC grant for his 6-year project on “The surfaces of cement and reinforced concrete”. Prof. Gargiani was deeply engaged at EPFL; he namely served as Director of the Architecture Section (2011-2015), Director of the "Archives of Modern Construction" at ENAC (2015-2017), as well as a member of the ENAC Academic Evaluation Committee (2013-2019). Roberto Gargiani has made a major contribution to the education of generations of architects through his numerous courses on the history of architecture in the bachelor and master cycles, the supervision of more than a hundred master projects, and the direction of a dozen doctoral theses. He has also contributed to the cultural openness of the school by inviting eminent professors and historians to complete the training offer in the field of architectural theory and history. Roberto Gargiani will continue teaching at the architecture section until the end of the spring semester 2022. We warmly thank Professor Gargiani for his exceptional commitment to our School.

Ianina Altschuler (PATT)

Ianina Altschuler oriente ses travaux sur les stratégies d’adaptation environnementale des microorganismes dans la cryosphère en régions alpines et polaires, en particulier dans le contexte du réchauffement climatique et des fluctuations de températures toujours plus importantes. A l’EPFL, elle approfondira ses recherches afin de contribuer de manière significative à la compréhension des stratégies d’adaptation écologique aux environnements hostiles. Sa nomination permettra de consolider à la fois le domaine de la formation et l’impact scientifique de l’ENAC.

Pier Vittorio Aureli (PA)

Le professeur Pier Vittorio Aureli, actuellement Professor in Practice à l’Université Yale, Etats-Unis, professeur invité à l’EPFL et co-directeur d’un bureau d’architecture à Bruxelles, Belgique, est nommé professeur associé d'architecture.
Pier Vittorio Aureli examine les bases de la théorie de l’architecture à la lumière des circonstances sociales et politiques récentes et s’interroge sur le rôle de la théorie ainsi que sur son rapport avec les pratiques de conception architecturales et environnementales. Il est considéré comme l’un des théoriciens de l’architecture et de l’environnement les plus influents de notre temps à l’échelle mondiale. Sa nomination représente pour l’ENAC et l’EPFL une possibilité unique de devenir une référence incontournable dans ce champ de recherche crucial.

Sara Bonetti (PATT)

La professeure Sara Bonetti, actuellement professeure assistante à l’Université de Wageningen, Pays-Bas, est nommée professeure assistante tenure track de sciences et ingénierie de l’environnement.
Sara Bonetti étudie les processus des surfaces des sols, de l’écologie et de l’eau sur un large spectre d’échelles spatiales et temporelles. Son travail combine notamment les processus hydrologiques et géomorphologiques pour comprendre l’érosion des sols en la quantifiant et, partant, l’évolution des surfaces terrestres. La nomination de cette chercheuse à la capacité d’innovation remarquable permettra d’encourager la collaboration avec d’autres institutions, dont le WSL, et contribuera à asseoir la réputation de la Faculté dans ce thème de recherche d’une importance majeure pour la société.

Gabriele Manoli (PATT)
Début le 01.09.2022 | Lausanne | Systèmes Urbains Durables et Stratégies d’Atténuation du Climat
Gabriele Manoli, actuellement Lecturer au University College, Londres, Grande-Bretagne, est nommé professeur assistant tenure track d’architecture.
Gabriele Manoli s’intéresse plus particulièrement aux systèmes d’eau, au bilan énergétique et au cycle du carbone des systèmes urbains et périurbains. De par leur nature interdisciplinaire, ses travaux permettent des recoupements entre l’ingénierie de l’environnement, les infrastructures bâties et l’urbanisme. A l’EPFL, ce chercheur de premier ordre abordera plus particulièrement la tendance actuelle mondiale de la densification urbaine et l'impact des modifications du climat urbain (p. ex. par la création d’espaces verts). La nomination de Gabriele Manoli permettra à la Faculté et à l’EPFL d’augmenter leur impact scientifique dans ce thème de recherche essentiel pour la société.

David Ruggiero (PATT)

David Ruggiero, actuellement Design Engineer chez Read Jones Christoffersen Ltd. à Toronto, Canada, est nommé professeur assistant tenure track de génie civil.
Les recherches de David Ruggiero ont pour objectif d’améliorer la compréhension du comportement des structures en béton armé et d’éléments structuraux en matériaux cimentaires. Il a entre autres développé un nouveau modèle théorique, appelé modèle général des composants de fissure (General Crack Component Model), qui pourrait être généralisé à une large gamme de matériaux cimentaires. A l’avenir, il prévoit de se concentrer sur le développement de matériaux durables et sur l’allongement du cycle de vie d’infrastructures. Il compte par ailleurs contribuer à des projets multidisciplinaires de l’EPFL.

Alfredo Thiermann (PATT)

Alfredo Thiermann, actuellement professeur invité à l’Université Harvard, Etats-Unis, est nommé professeur assistant tenure track d'architecture.
Ses recherches, qui se situent à l’intersection entre l’architecture et différents médias, portent sur des thèmes allant des installations sonores et de la scénographie cinématographique aux maisons individuelles, bâtiments publics et infrastructures à grande échelle. Alfredo Thiermann s’intéresse plus particulièrement à la transition de l’ère industrielle vers l’ère numérique. Sa vision transversale de l’architecture permettra à ce chercheur novateur de contribuer de manière déterminante aux clusters stratégiques de l’ENAC dans les domaines des infrastructures et villes numériques ainsi que des territoires durables.

Rizlan Bernier-Latmani (PO)

La professeure Rizlan Bernier-Latmani, actuellement professeure associée à l’EPFL, est nommée professeure ordinaire de microbiologie environnementale.
Rizlan Bernier-Latmani consacre ses travaux à la biodégradation des métaux toxiques et des radionucléides par des micro-organismes. Dans le cadre de ses expériences sur le terrain, elle fait appel à des techniques et concepts issus de disciplines très variées, telles que la microbiologie, la biologie moléculaire, la chimie analytique (incluant la spectroscopie à rayons X) et la géochimie. Une bourse ERC Consolidator Grant lui a été attribuée en 2017. Véritable modèle pour les femmes scientifiques, Rizlan Bernier-Latmani fait preuve de beaucoup d’engagement au sein de l’EPFL, notamment pour la promotion des femmes.

Roberto Gargiani
Lausanne | Theory and history of architecture
Roberto Gargiani, professeur ordinaire et directeur du Laboratoire de théorie et d'histoire de l'architecture à l'ENAC depuis 2005, est Professeur honoraire depuis le 1er mars 2022.
Le professeur Gargiani a été le premier candidat dans toute l'Europe dans le domaine de l'architecture à obtenir une bourse ERC pour son projet de 6 ans sur "Les surfaces du ciment et du béton armé". Le Prof. Gargiani a été très engagé à l'EPFL; il a été directeur de la Section d'architecture (2011-2015), directeur des “Archives de la Construction Moderne” à l'ENAC (2015-2017), ainsi que membre du Comité d'évaluation académique ENAC (2013-2019). Roberto Gargiani a apporté une contribution majeure à la formation de générations d'architectes à travers ses nombreux cours d'histoire de l'architecture des cycles de bachelor et de master, le suivi de plus d'une centaine de projets de master, et la direction d'une dizaine de thèses de doctorat. Il a également participé à l'ouverture culturelle de l'école en invitant des professeurs et historiens éminents pour compléter l'offre de formation dans le domaine de la théorie et de l'histoire de l'architecture. Roberto Gargiani continuera à enseigner à la section d'architecture jusqu'à la fin du semestre de printemps 2022. Nous remercions chaleureusement le professeur Gargiani pour son engagement exceptionnel au sein de notre école.
