A Letter from
Our Chair

I am very pleased to provide to you, on behalf of Past Chair Doug Cook; Vice Chair Marissa Vaughan; and the entire ABCA Board of Directors, the Annual Report, for Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority, for 2021.

This most recent Annual Report is a special one indeed.

It includes a 12-page insert with feature articles and photos about the legacy of stewardship and conservation work in our 12 member municipalities over more than 75 years.

This series of articles, profiling some of your valued contributions that protect life, property, water, soil, and habitat for all living things, was part of the 2021 commemoration of ABCA’s 75th anniversary (1946-2021).

We are providing this report to you as a PDF-file digital download on our Annual Reports page here:
We print a limited number of paper copies and if you would like a printed copy please let us know and we would be happy to provide you with one. Documents are also available in alternate formats upon request.

The new Annual Report celebrates municipal and provincial and community partnerships. It is because of these close partnerships we have been able to protect life and property and to build healthier and more resilient watersheds.

The report celebrates past successes. It also looks to the future.

The report looks to the challenges of the next 75 years as we work to realize the mission our citizens defined for us in the Conservation Strategy to “protect, improve, conserve, and restore the watershed in partnership with the community.”

The report also encourages us to continue to move towards that vision the community saw for us of “healthy watersheds where our needs and the needs of the natural environment are in balance.”

We hope you enjoy the report.

We also want to thank you again for your crucial role in protecting our people and our watershed resources.

The successes of 75 years of conservation could not have been possible without you. We look forward to continued work, in close partnership with you, in 2022 and the years to come.

Sincerely,

Dave Jewitt,
Chair,
Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority Board of Directors
Invasive Species Awareness Week is February 8 to March 4, 2022.

Invasive Species Awareness Week

Invasive Species Awareness Week is Monday, February 28 to Friday, March 4, 2022.

We thank all our community partners helping to properly remove invasive species and to plant native species.

Learn more here:  #InvSpWk
An event is taking place to get rid of Garlic Mustard.

You are invited to help remove invasive species at Community Garlic Mustard Pull

You are invited to the Community Garlic Mustard Pull on Saturday, May 7, 2022 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The community Garlic Mustard Pull takes place at 71402 Morrison Line, two kilometres east of Exeter, south of Morrison Reservoir (Morrison Lake) at Morrison Dam Conservation Area (MDCA). Please meet at the pavilion. All ages are welcome.

Why is it so important to remove Garlic Mustard? Garlic Mustard is an invasive plant that can have a negative impact on our forest ecosystem health.

Removing Garlic Mustard is a positive action we can take to protect forest health and steward the land.

Starting at 1 p.m. participants will learn how to identify Garlic Mustard (and Poison Ivy!) and how to effectively remove it. You will then be assigned an area to tackle.

To find out more, and to register, visit our Garlic Mustard Pull event page here: Secondary school students can bring their Community Involvement Form to be filled out by Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) staff.

Dress for the weather. Long pants and close-toed shoes are recommended. Please bring your own gardening gloves (optional).  Please bring a face mask for when physical distancing is not possible.

Virtual Conservation Dinner partner program with restaurants returns.

Conservation Dinner online auction brings back Dining for Your Community program

Auction goes online in 2022 but you can support community projects, local businesses by dining at participating restaurants

The Conservation Dinner charitable auction is online in 2022 so patrons won’t be together in one hall this year but they can still enjoy a dining experience and support their community at the same time.

The Conservation Dinner Committee is bringing back the Dining for Your Community program, for the second straight year, in partnership with local participating restaurants.

The Dinner Committee invites you to ‘dine for your community’ in order to ‘support local projects one meal at a time.’

The 2022 #VirtualConservationDinner online auction begins on Thursday, March 31, 2022 and ends on Thursday, April 7, 2022 at 9 p.m.

Some participating local restaurants will donate some proceeds from special feature entreés during specific dates of the online auction week.

As restaurants offering these special fundraising meals are announced, information will be shared on the conservationdinner.com restaurants page.

Dave Frayne is Chair of the Conservation Dinner Committee. He says the Conservation Dinner auction event is online but people can still enjoy fine dining while supporting their community at the same time.

“You can support local community conservation projects and your local businesses by buying these special restaurant feature dinners,” he says.

The Dinner Committee and local dining establishments partnered on this program for the first time in 2021. Nine local restaurants took part.

“I want to thank all the restaurants which took part last year and I encourage them and other restaurants to be involved this year,” Dave says.

The participating restaurant determines which special entreé they plan to offer; the amount of proceeds to be donated to community projects of the #VirtualConservationDinner for each one sold; and the date and times this special feature will be offered.

The Dinner Committee publicizes the restaurant’s participation through local and social media; websites; social media; and livestream TV and Internet broadcasts.

Even when large in-person events are not possible the need to raise funds remains, according to the Dinner Committee. The Conservation Dinner is a partnership of the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Foundation and Exeter Lions Club.

This dinner and auction charitable fundraising event started in 1990. Net profits are split evenly between community conservation projects of the Foundation and community conservation projects of the Exeter Lions Club.

The event has raised more than $1.255 million for the community over more than 30 years.

The Committee invites the public to order these special meals and take them home to enjoy their home-version ‘Conservation Dinner’ while bidding on great items at the online auction.

You may find out more about the #VirtualConservationDinner feature entreés, and other ways to support your community at abca.ca and conservationdinner.com or phone 519-235-2610 or toll-free 1-888-286-2610.
