Dear friends and partners,

Change starts with a bold vision and a clear plan — and I am proud to see both in the 100-Day Plan recently released by LAUSD’s new Superintendent. This ambitious blueprint focuses on listening to the needs of our communities, accelerating academic progress, and putting students at the center of our decisions. I look forward to working with Supt. Carvalho to put his plan into action and realize a vision of opportunity and success for all kids

Among our many goals for driving progress in school communities, the most urgent task at hand is supporting the academic, physical, and socio-emotional recovery of our students from this crisis. As leaders in every level of government prepare for the next phase of the pandemic, I have consistently pushed the District to stay aligned with public health guidance. With recent updates from the State and County allowing districts to move from requiring indoor masking to recommending it on March 12, I am hopeful that LAUSD can work with all stakeholders to align our own protocols by then.

I will continue to advocate for a clear and consistent roadmap from public health officials to better prepare our school communities and communicate with our families. As health conditions evolve, I hope that the wellbeing of our students — and prioritizing their safe return to normality — is considered above all else.

Onward,

In the Community: The Latest from Board District 4
Over the past weeks, I was thrilled to attend Loyola Village's Black History Month student performance, celebrate Read Across America Week at Stoner Ave ES and ICEF Vista, check out the community garden at Emerson MS, congratulate the Academic Decathlon team at WESM HS, and visit classrooms at Paseo del Rey ES and Tarzana ES! It has also been exciting to continue meeting the new BD4 schools in the Reseda community, including Grey Continuation HS and Shirley Ave ES!
We also joined with community partners to host our latest virtual town hall, where we shared helpful information about tax credits and eligibility, filing tips, and other resources to ensure our families know how to get the most out of their tax refunds this year! In the Spotlight: Kentwood EEC leading our youngest learners to success
Dr. Ayanna E. Davis, principal of the newly opened Kentwood Early Education Center and powerful advocate for our youngest learners, was recently recognized as one of this year’s “Unsung Heroes” by the California Legislative Black Caucus. This award seeks to recognize individuals who have contributed selflessly and substantively to the communities they serve and lift up the accomplishments that all too often go unnoticed. Dr. Davis has worked in education for 27 years, and in addition to her leadership at Kentwood EEC, she also represents Early Education administrators on the AALA Executive Board and advocates for students as president-elect of the Southern California Chapter of the CA Association for the Education of Young Children. Kudos to a well-deserved recognition!
