Where Does Russia Fit in End Time Prophecy?

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues. Nations have imposed sanctions upon Russia—which involve everything from bank transfers, to banning Russian flights from flying to major world capitols, to the pouring of Russian vodka down sewers in protest against this naked act of aggression. Ukrainian troops valiantly resist the invasion. Citizens have taken up arms and are ready to defend their cities, street by street and block by block. The plight of Ukraine draws us all into a scene we have only read about in history.

I say this because, like many of you, I am a student of history. I have read much about the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia and the annexation of the Sudentland in 1938. Germany’s invasion of Poland in 1938 ignited World War II. Not since the end of that war have we seen such an act of aggression in Europe. This action by Russia is changing the world. It could well lead to other actions and be a catalyst for even larger events described in Bible prophecy.

Last week I wrote that we await the appearance of the 10th horn of the beast of Revelation 17. The world power embodied in that figurative horn will have its roots in Europe. Russia’s action has begun to stir the nations of Europe from slumber. Since 1945 European nations have built an economic success story. The EU has been an economic union but not a complete political union. While there are national armed forces, there is no united EU military command structure. Germany has not rearmed itself to the extent of a regional power. Instead, it has relied on the alliance of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the nuclear umbrella of the United States.

So, now there are calls for Germany to rearm itself and begin spending more on national defense. This will change the balance of power in Europe. Europe is awakening to the stark reality of naked aggression by one nation upon another. The myth of a brotherhood of nations avoiding conflict through common ties of economic interest is shattered.

A key prophecy in the book of Daniel details the invasion of the Middle East by a power called the King of the North. History and prophecy identify this power coming from the European heartland. “And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over. He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon” (Daniel 11:40-41).

We have long wondered how this could occur. Europe lacks the military capability and the will to do something like this. How could this geopolitical reality change to allow such an act to happen? We could be seeing that now, with Russia attacking a sovereign democratic nation in Europe—Ukraine. Europe has had a wake-up call. As I have written earlier, their “holiday from history” is over. We are watching the throes of an awakening “beast.”
