MARCH NEWSLETTER 2022

Storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin whipped through leaving a trail of destruction of fine old trees felled and power cuts and flooding further up country – I hope you have all pulled through. The leaden skies have cleared and Spring is trying hard to cheer us all as we cope now with Putinxiety. Our world has suddenly got a lot more fragile, on top of climate change, Brexit and Covid and we need clear heads, comfort and distraction more than ever. Manual work and radio 3 are this potter’s go to therapy: I have thrown rows and rows of small mugs this week and am handling today. The repetitive action of a trusted craft is so good for the soul, making useful objects to bring warmth and sustenance to that particular moment of need….and it got me thinking…..
We plan to make a limited edition of 100 pots to raise funds for those poor Ukrainians via the Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine Appeal. They will be simple beakers decorated in a blue and a yellow stripe as on their flag. The size is as wide as a small mug and as tall as a Large /Regular mug . They should be ready to buy later this month – please check out the website Shop Available Now - at a cost of £20 each including UK P&P with £15 of each going to the charity. Apparently beakers are de rigueur for some youth these days for coffees but they would also be sweet for a posy of primroses or to keep pencils in etc.  I hope you agree and will buy several – we can post anywhere but will charge a little for overseas. Fitzhead has also ordered a flag to fly off the church tower next to the Pottery – it is the least we can do.
Orders this last month have included a whopping plate of a hunting lodge in Scotland surrounded by rather exuberant local wildfowl; several wedding presents and remember you can have a personalisation on the back for free too; there are two kitchens of tiles to paint – one with birds and the other hens which I will enjoy immensely. But for now, back to handling 76 mugs and turning beakers thrown yesterday.
And thanks to Minum Blair and Yvan in Quebec for these beautiful watercolours of my pottery there – please send any special images you have of NWPottery in your home and with your permission, I will post on Instagram.

Warm wishes,
