We all want to close the gap between our websites and our competitors.
There's a plethora of data and information available, and it can often be challenging to know where to start.
One of the best ways that I've found to do this is by benchmarking the competition and finding the areas where you are above or below average. Focusing on these is where you will see the most significant difference.
Where Should You Start?
You won't move the needle by further improving areas where you are already ahead.
So, if you have a much better backlink profile, don't spend more time and effort on gaining more backlinks - this won't make much difference in closing the gap.
However, if your site speed is slower or the user experience isn't as smooth, these are areas where you should focus.
My former colleague Lidia Infante discussed this during her recent Women in Tech SEO Festival talk, and you can check out her methodology for benchmarking the competition here: Competitor Identification.
