Loreto Highlights Update - 4th March 2022
Lent
In chapel this week, Mr Earle spoke to Years 3 and 4 about Lent.
He started with a quote from the Bible, “Return to me with your whole heart” and then explained how God sent his only Son, not only to die for us but to take our sins upon him for our salvation. Linking this to our Bible quote for the day, he explained that during Lent we make promises of prayer, fasting and almsgiving to God, all of which help us return and place him back in the centre of our lives.
Ash Wednesday
On Wednesday morning Father Paul joined us in our School Chapel.  Pupils from Foundation Stage 2 to Year 6 received their Ashes.  Pope Francis announced Ash Wednesday as a day of prayer and fasting for the Ukraine.  Pupils joined together in a special prayer of Peace for the conflict in the Ukraine.
World Book Day
Pupils and Staff at Loreto Convent School took part in World Book Day. This is something we have missed during these recent covid times. The school librarians and staff prepared an action packed selection of activities for the pupils to enjoy throughout the day.  Pupils enjoyed a class book quiz, treasure hunt, storytelling, solving the Mystery of the Missing Macaw, amongst other wonderful activities.
Year 5 at JMH
Year 5 were very fortunate to attend the World Book Day activities at the John McIntosh Hall yesterday. The activities involved a drama workshop, an art activity and a story-telling session. These were all based on the book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, written by Roald Dahl.

EAL Year 2
George and Victoria have been sorting magnetic letters to make words this week during their lessons with our EAL teacher.
BFG
Year 3 children invented their own giants and created ‘Wanted’ posters as part of our work on the BFG.
They incorporated compound words in their descriptions and illustrated their work.
Our theme for World Book Day was Roald Dahl and children came dressed as many different characters from his stories.

Faith Diary
Lent is a time of repentance, a time to slow down, to look at our lives in order to take stock of where we are and where we want to go. It is therefore no accident that the first Sunday of Lent gives us a Gospel reflection on Jesus' time in the desert. We all experience ‘desert’ times in our lives, times of physical or emotional need, during which we may be tempted to rely on our own strength and reject the call of the Spirit. Lent is a time for doing things differently, for doing as Jesus did, for rejecting the many temptations we are presented with daily, and turning back to God instead. It is a time for each of us to reject our pride and self-reliance, to humbly take His hand and let him guide us on the path of loving self-denial that will lead us through the Lenten desert to the glory of Easter Sunday.
Creative Coding
This week our Year 6 pupils were introduced to the Micro:bit coding hardware.  The pupils explored how to write code, input this onto the Micro:bit and then see the output on the hardware display.  Luna said "This is awesome", Emily said "Where can I buy one", an exciting lesson for all the pupils.
Something Fishy!
This week we have learned all about fish.  Pupils worked as a group collaboratively to set up a small world 'under the sea' play area.
