Dear Friend,

Two Bridges Hike on Lincoln Creek Greenway

SATURDAY, March 12th, 10 am

Photo showing a footbridge across Lincoln Creek at the corner of 49th and Parkway DriveWe'll hike (more of a stroll, really) along the greenway where we will explore and envision what could be, investigating urban habitat by moving slowly and mindfully.  World Water Day is coming up so we are planning a Water Ritual to celebrate the gift of water to our planet.  Nearby Nature's Master Naturalist Martina Patterson will lead the ceremony and walk.  Northwest Side CDC will come along and share what they are up to in the neighborhood. Migrating birds are returning so bring binoculars. Meet at 4900 W Parkway Dr.  That's on 49th St on the north side of the creek, a few blocks south of Hampton Ave.  We'll be walking on mostly level pavement and grass.  Check the weather and dress appropriately. Check Facebook for updates and to see who's coming

Spring Exploration and Discovery

2022  African American Environmental Pioneer Awards

A Great Success

In the past three years, this program has recognized 35 members of Milwaukee's African American community for their environmental contributions.  We thank everyone who participated, especially Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes, who delivered a stirring keynote address.  If  you missed it, Susan Bence, WUWM environmental reporter created this wonderful recap of the event.

Lincoln Creek Conversations

Lincoln Creek on a winter dayLast November, Nearby Nature hosted a series of "Lincoln Creek Conversations" to try to understand the community's relationship with the waterway and how things can improve. We held two Zoom sessions and two "Walk and Talk" hikes along Lincoln Creek.  The sessions were attended by a total of 35 individuals representing 16 organizations. The sessions were recorded and a summary of the conversations can be found at this link.
In March, we plan to continue these conversations, especially reaching out to those who could not attend. If you (or your organization) see yourself as a stakeholder in Lincoln Creek's neighborhoods, we want to have you involved. Contact us: contact@nearbynaturemke.org to get engaged.

Your donations are always welcome

Nearby Nature works in neighborhoods impacted by high poverty and inequity.  We rely on contributions from people like you, to keep our programs, projects, and outings going.  Even if you do not live in these neighborhoods, you can help make a difference.  We are very grateful for the foundation support we get from Fund for Lake Michigan, Greater Milwaukee Foundation, Bader Philanthropies and the James E Dutton Foundation.

But we also rely very heavily on private donations from people just like you.  Your contribution could make a big difference in the quality of life in a community historically traumatized by poverty and systemic racism. Every contribution is appreciated.  If you want to earmark your donation for a particular program, you can select from a list online, or specify by contacting us.  If you are 71 or over, and can make a tax exempt distribution from an IRA, ask us about Qualified Charitable Distributions.

All contributions to Nearby Nature are tax-deductible through our non-profit fiscal sponsor the Milwaukee Environmental Consortium.  If you are able to make any contribution to our work, use this link for Online Donation or mail a check.  Checks must be made out payable to Milwaukee Environmental Consortium.  Mail to: Nearby Nature MKE c/o Milwaukee Environmental Consortium, 1836 W.
