LWVHC UPDATES
The Official Newsletter of LWVHC

March 20, 2022
The United States of America has a government of laws and not of men. The Constitution and federal law set the boundaries of what is acceptable conduct, and for this reason... when there is a dispute between the Legislature and the Executive branch over what the law requires about the circumstances under which government officials must act, the Judiciary has the authority, and the responsibility, to decide the issue.--Ketanji Brown Jackson, American attorney, jurist, federal judge, and Supreme Court nominee.

The League of Women Voters applauds President Biden for delivering on his commitment to name a Black woman to the highest court in the land.... The nomination of the first Black woman to the nation’s highest court reinforces the power of women to create a more perfect democracy...Read the LWVUS statement from Board President Dr. Deborah Turner and CEO Virginia Kase Solomón on the historic nomination of the first Black woman jurist to the Supreme Court, Ketanji Brown Jackson.

Missing: LWVHC's Metal Sign, pictured below.
Description: About 2x2 feet, folds flat so is able to hide well.
Last seen: Early 2020
(If we knew more, we'd know where to look for it!)
How you can help: If you helped set up or take down a pre-Covid event, please check your closets, car trunk, garage, or shed to be sure the folded sign is not hidden away. We'd love to re-unite our sign with our next event.  If you find it, please send us an email!

Tuesday, March 22nd, 4 pm 301 N. Washington St.  Kaplan Auditorium Main Library

Henderson County Manager John Mitchell will provide an overview of county government---what it does and doesn't "do"---including boards and committees---and the many ways that we, as citizens, may participate.

(Then consider becoming a member of our own LWVHC Home & Observer Team to continue learning and advocating!)

For our April Alice Group, we'll be discussing the war in Ukraine/Russia/American foreign policy in Europe.  We have three excellent articles to provide context for our discussion. The first and main article is by Ben Rhodes, who is the former Deputy National Security Advisor under President Barack Obama. The second article is by Anne Applebaum,  a staff writer for The Atlantic, who writes about civil society in Central and Eastern Europe. The third article is by Thomas Meaney who writes about  U.S. foreign policy, international relations, and history for The New Yorker and other publications.

Board member Paul Goebel will facilitate our conversation.
