Footsteps & Pedals Newsletter

Volume 21, Issue 1 - March, 2022

Welcome

Welcome to the first newsletter for 2022. This year, the 21st year regular newsletters under the Footsteps name have been produced we recognise the Cycling Trail as a regular and important feature of SARTI's goal of supporting multi-purpose trails by changing our newsletter title slightly.

A lot has changed in 21 years. The Lavender Cycling Trail has been established because of the demand to be able to cycle from Murray Bridge to Clare. The walking and cycling sections share common sections where possible, however, to avoid the hundreds of stiles over fences existing on some of the walking sections of trail, there are some separate sections for walkers and cyclists. As new maps are updated and released, the specific cycling sections are shown. The latest map 2 is the first to incorporate specific cycling sections of trail as well as adding new trails.

When the Lavender Federation Walking Trail was completed 4 years ago most of the SARTI Board thought most of the work was over and we could relax. How wrong we were!

This newsletter will indicate some of SARTI’s current projects and let you know of events that now occur on the LFT that weren’t envisaged when we started our trail building.

In this issue:

  • Opening of the 2022 Walking Season.
  • Marathon events on the LFT in 2022.
  • Trail upgrades and new trails planned at Kinchina CP.
  • Overnight stay location at Rockleigh.
  • History of the LFT part 5.
  • Economic flow on from trails
  • Bits and Pieces.

Opening of the 2022 Walking Season

An expo to celebrate the start of the South Australian bushwalking season will be held in April. With the arrival of cooler autumn weather, hiking is an ideal outdoor activity. Marathon Events on the LFT in 2022

There are several marathons planned this year that will use all or part of the Lavender Federation Trail. If you are planning to use the trail on the walking sections for an organized walk, these are probably dates you should avoid.
Events we have been notified for this year are: -

Irrational South 200 Miler:-

The 2022 event dates are Wednesday 6th April to Sunday 10th April, along the entirety of the Lavender Federation Trail from Murray Bridge to Clare.

Irrational South 200 Miler Website

The organizers of this event, Ultra series Western Australia reports;
"We run 20 events around the country each year.” For the SA event “we are expecting around 30-50 runners to tackle this event with a 100-hour cut-off. The runners, hikers, joggers, and walkers will be spread pretty thinly as the first runner will come in around 45 hours and the last hiker around the 100-hour mark.”

Murraylands Multisports Inc: - FEDERATION ULTRA TRAIL

Murraylands Multisports Inc. is planning to run an ultra-trail run on Sunday 14th of August 2022.

The plan is to run from Springton to Murray Bridge on the Lavender Federation Trail.
We would be conducting this during daylight hours and within the full trail and farming code of conducts around gates, approaching stock etc. we would also limit the field to 50 participants for our 100 km from Springton, 75 km from Tungkillo and 50 km from Rockleigh CFS Mt Beevor.

FEDERATION ULTRA TRAIL - Website

Well worth checking out this website - other events such as Kinchina Trail Run - Run 4 Type 1 and The Rockleigh 105 Gravel Fest (Cycling) are listed.

Organizers of any event; marathons or an organized event other than walking or cycling clubs and groups are requested to contact SARTI.

There are several requirements that organizers need to comply with in the early stages of planning an event.

Depending on what type of event is planned, this may include notifying landowners and some local government authorities. The main Lavender Federation Trail and some of the connecting loop and spur trails cross private property. Our agreement with local landowners is that the trail is only for the use of walkers.

Some events, such as the Irrational South 200 Miler have competitors running during the night with check points and rest spots set up at various locations. It is important that everyone that could be affected, local groups, landowners, and State and Local Government authorities are aware of special events.

SARTI encourages use of its trail network, but it is important that we continue having good relations and cooperation of local communities.

Trail Upgrades and New Trails Planned at Kinchina CP

Late last year several SARTI members met with Joseph Gallasch, Local Ranger for National Parks and Wildlife Service at Kinchina Conservation Park, Monarto. We looked at the Lavender Federation Trail through Rocky Gully and several areas where changes were needed.

The trail, except for three short sections, is largely unchanged since it was first constructed over 20 years ago and still mainly follows the route of tracks that were in the area before the LFT was conceived. Rocky Gully was the first section of the LFT constructed off road. Most of the LFT is currently not of an acceptable location or standard considering current usage, erosion, increasing use, location & trail bike damage.

Only three sections, all involving major changes, have changed since 1999. The first in 2009 under Forestry SA supervision involved a team of Green Army volunteers over two weeks in two locations, the second in 2015 by walking and mountain bike volunteers near the intersection of the Jailbreak Trail.

Plans are evolving for several changes and additions within the park. An independent trail assessment is well underway on what works are required including the entire length of the LFT within Kinchina.

An additional trail linking the Cypress Hill Trail to the LFT in Rocky Gully near the western rail bridge over Rocky Gully is part of the assessment. The survey should be completed early this year and will then be used to apply for funds to undertake the work.

Overnight Stay Location at Rockleigh

SARTI receives many enquiries on our web site from walkers, often from other States and unfamiliar with the Lavender Federation Trail. Usually these are from walkers planning a continuous end to end walk.

The most common questions?
Where can I stay overnight and where can I get water?

A current project of SARTI is a listing of locations meeting these requirements from B & B to a place to erect a tent. Where an established location is not available, encourage Local Government authorities to place these facilities about 20 kilometers apart. The Rural City of Murray Bridge has erected a shelter for walkers & bike riders at Monarto Recreation Reserve where toilets already exist and make available by prior arrangement, a building for large groups.

A second location has been investigated at Rockleigh. A short deviation from the main trail is Harry’s Rockleigh Bush Camp at 380 Critchley Rd, Rockleigh, an established location.

Harry’s Bush Camp is already established and available for bookings and enquiries. It is approximately 20 km from Monarto Recreation Reserve, has basic toilets, showers, and BBQ available. There are a variety of accommodation options from camping, on site van and horse drawn vans to a separate fully equipped cabin. Local tours available by Clydesdale horse drawn carts by prior arrangement.
Note that it is essential you call ahead to arrange access. From April to June, bookings at 0403 721 004 speak to Terisa. Outside this 3 month period you can contact Harry directly on 0417 833 640.

Our web site has information on: website accommodation page

There you will find a list of accommodation suppliers, group accommodation and much more. Arranged by map number, links are provided to each accommodation web site & social media if available.

History of the Lavender Federation Trail

Back in Time - Part 5.

Part 4 of this series of article on the history of the Lavender Federation Trail was published in March last year in Footsteps Volume 20 Part 1.

All past issues of Footsteps are available to read on the Lavender Federation Trail website.

The Tungkillo to Springton section of the Lavender Federation Trail was officially opened on the 7th of May 2006 at Springton together with the release of Map 2 Mount Beevor to Springton. Version 1 of this map included the main trail and the first of many loop and spur trails, the Tungkillo Loop Trail.

Planning by Ian Pool and his team was well underway for future sections of the Trail. Thinking at the time was:-

  • Stage 4: - Springton to Keyneton.
  • Stage 5: - Keyneton to Stockwell.
  • Stage 6: - Stockwell to Truro via a disused railway corridor.
  • Stage 7: - Truro to Kapunda.
  • Stage 8: - Kapunda to Tarlee.
  • Stage 9: - Tarlee to Rhynie.
  • Stage 10: - Rhynie to Auburn.
  • Stage 11: - Auburn to Clare possibly using the Riesling Trail.

The next section of trail planned was from Springton to Truro. This was to be one of the most difficult sections to investigate. Around eleven alternative routes for the main trail were explored, one alternative incorporating a section of a disused section of rail corridor from south of Stockwell to near Truro. This section was eventually scrapped as a possible route because of the demand by authorities to pave the railway ballast. The possibility it may, in the past, have been sprayed with arsenic required paving over the ballast, a cost SARTI could not justify.

A look at the map of one small section of the area between Springton and Truro gives an indication of the amount of investigation required to find a suitable route for a trail. Many months of investigation, initially looking at detailed maps showing road reserves, on the ground investigation walking and driving hundreds of kilometers, visiting and talking to residents, resident associations, and landowners. Experience had shown SARTI that nothing can beat local knowledge and utilizing that knowledge, experience and cooperation gives the best results.

Eventually, as the alternative routes were investigated, a preferred route for the main trail was established. It would be 40 kilometers long.
The next step was connection to nearby towns. Following principles established by Terry Lavender and early proponents of the trail that it should, where possible, go through or near smaller regional towns and communities, link, spur, and loop trails were investigated. The result was the plan to build three spur trails to Truro, the Princess Highway NE of Truro and Keyneton. Additionally, there would be three loop trails at Springton, Eden Valley and Moculta totaling 45.5 kilometers.

As trail route alternatives were investigated and alternative routes eliminated, the number of stiles, markers and interpretive signs required became more defined.

An application to build the next section of trail was submitted to the Office for Recreation and Sport in August 2008 requesting $67,307 for 50% of the project cost.
The application was unsuccessful.

Further applications under other funding programs were submitted. Two in 2009 and one in 2010, each for lesser amounts for specific sections of the overall trail and connecting loop and spur trails. The 2010 application to the ORS for $9837 to build the Springton-Keyneton main trail was successful. Third time we had applied for funding for the Springton to Truro section, but it was a start. A further application for the next section from Keyneton to Truro was submitted late 2010. This application was also successful.

Funding of some of the loop trails and erection of interpretive signs in towns were funded by Local Government.

Successful Federal Government grants enabled SARTI to purchase tools for trail building, first aid kits and reimbursement for volunteer vehicle expenses. As trail building locations extended further from Adelaide, travel costs to our volunteers were increasing.

While investigation of the next trail sections, funding and trail building commenced, other SARTI activities were proceeding including:-

  • Investigating taking the existing trail off Hartman Road Monarto onto DEW land. After the expiry of leases for stock grazing, this occurred in late 2015, SARTI was permitted to use this land with the new section built by walkers and mountain bikers. The revised route was incorporated into the 2nd edition of map 1.
  • Attending a trail building seminar and practical workshop in Rocky Gully conducted by Forestry SA. Forestry SA were then the land managers of Rocky Gully that is now part of Kinchina Conservation Park. Forestry investigating trails in Rocky Gully estimated an outlay of $30,000 to upgrade the LFT through Rocky Gully and $90,000 to build the northern loop trail.
  • Several sections in Rocky Gully were upgraded by two Green Army teams working over two weeks in 2009.
  • Opening of the 2009 Walking Season was organized by SARTI at Eden Valley.
  • A web site was now active but quite basic.
  • A public meeting at Eudunda to inform local residents of our future plans from Truro to Eudunda occurred in late 2010. Attended by a wide variety of residents, businesses and landowners, feedback increased the length of the trail by over 10 kilometers as property owners suggested more scenic alternatives. One offering his property for the trail and, if we supplied materials, build the trail, and maintain it.
  • Presentations made at Burra, Barossa Council, and the Truro Community Association.

The Eudunda to Truro section was opened at Truro in April 2012. It had taken 6 years from the opening in Springton to plan, obtain finance and build over 85 kilometers of trail.

Economic flow on from trails

One of the objectives of the Lavender Federation Trail when building a trail on the eastern side of the Mt Lofty Ranges was still in its infancy was to build the trail near or through smaller towns and communities.

This objective was to give an economic benefit to these communities by purchasing trail building materials locally and the benefits that followed when the trail was opened.

An example of this from SARTI Board Member representing cycling and rail trails, Helen Dominish.

Eudunda Silos

On Friday 7 and Saturday 8 January 2022, the Uncool Cycling Club visited Eudunda to check out some loops on the Lavender Cycling Trail.

Inspiration Point (West of Robertstown)

Some stayed overnight at the Eudunda Hotel Motel, others at the Eudunda Caravan Park and the rest made day trips for their preferred ride. Cyclists enjoyed coffee and cake at the Robertstown Community Cafe, dinner at Kooky's Kafe and lunch at the Eudunda Bakery.

Although the weather was grey and at times drizzling and windy, everyone was happy to make the most of the cooler weather and was impressed by what the area had to offer.

Bits & Pieces:-

Tracker Stats

SARTI monitors a number of Tracker electronic trail use counters at various locations. A number are located along the LFT, several in Kinchina Conservation Park we read on behalf of Parks SA and one on the Murray Coorong Trail read on behalf of the Rural City of Murray Bridge. Tallies are read monthly with the results sent to Walking SA, Department of Environment & Water, Tourism SA and some tourist operators and Local Governments. Yearly totals for 2021 are now available.

The most popular section of the LFT is located within Kinchina CP at the western end where 5044 (6001 in 2020) were recorded peaking at 822 in August.

The Jailbreak Trail, also a part of the Lavender Federation Trail Callington Spur was 17,486 (20914 in 2020) for the year peaking at 1755 in October.

Initial figures from a Tracker on the Murray Coorong Trail installed on a levy bank north of Murray Bridge indicated over 1100 using this trail each month. The $1100 Tracker was stolen after two months by thieves cutting away the mounting post.

Future Eudunda, Morgan & Robertstown Plans

Investigations continue for the plans to build a multi-use link trail between Eudunda and Morgan. This trail will form another connection between the Lavender Federation and Murray Coorong Trails. These trails share a section between Sturt and Hume Reserves at Murray Bridge.

A shelter for an overnight stop is currently being investigated by the Goyder Council at Inspiration Point. Plans proposed include seating, table, information signs and a rainwater tank.

Upgrading of the rail corridor between Eudunda and Hampton resulting from a successful grant by the Goyder Council from the Federal Government COVID grants assistance scheme is in the early stages of planning. More as plans develop.

Cyclists & Walkers Will Get Friendly Welcome From New Publican's at Eudunda's 'Top Pub' (Hotel/Motel)

Karen & Jasen have only just taken over the Eudunda Hotel Motel for a couple weeks and have big plans to make the facility a comfortable and inviting one. They have much enthusiasm and some things have already been improved..

They are excited to let everyone in the Lavender  Federation Trail and Lavender Cycling Trail community know that they are most welcome.

Jasen shared this photo of cyclists enjoying a rest out the front of the pub.

Jasen was happy to share that they had a large group of cyclists (8) who rode from Truro to Clare and camped in Eudunda over night and had food at the Hotel.  They were posting on Facebook and we committed to them to have a Vegetarian Food Option.

Another large group of cyclists will be staying soon as well.  So, we appreciate the work that SARTI are doing to get these cyclists here and we will do everything we can to make sure the word gets around.

I am a keen cyclist and have done rides in Australia and in France so was happy to chat to our visitors and pointed out places of interest.

Once the walking season opens we hope that Walkers will also be in the mix enjoying the trails as well. (Sub-Editor)

Flash Flooding Hits Trail in Eudunda and South

On the 16th March Eudunda township was hit by a tremendous downpour, including hail resulting in 46mm of rain, most of which fell in about a half hour. For the second time in a year the main Bruce Street was turned into a river. For the second time the shops in the main street suffered damage from flood water.

Readers might be surprised to realize that this footpath is actually "The Lavender Federation Trail" (some of the veranda post have trail markers on them).and the road (to the right) itself is also the "Lavender Cycling Trail".

This pedestrian is taking a risk! (not quite so bad just here as it should be fairly firm under foot).

Our Advice:
Never walk, ride or drive in flood water (unless under threat).

Flooding was mainly confined to the Eudunda Range and as far south as Dutton, so please take care in these areas. Markers may also have been washed away until our trail maintenance team can replace them.

Eudunda RSL Invite You To Attend ANZAC Dawn Service.

Walkers and Cyclists who may be staying in the area, or who might want to have an early start to thier trip from Eudunda are most welcome to attend the local ANZAC Dawn Service.

The service is followed by a parade to the local RSL Rooms just down the street (On the LFT) where you can join the community and have a cuppa and bikies before you go out to enjoy our countryside.
Warning: expect to dress warm for the Dawn Service.

Details on the Eudunda RSL website

Not planning to be in Eudunda? Our RSL members encourage you to join in with any of the other town services along the trail. We know there will be a service a bit later in the morning at Robertstown.(to be confirmed).

Towns along the trail known to have a service are - Clare, Watervaie, Waterloo, Robertstown, Eudunda, Mount Pleasant, Murray Bridge.
Interestingly some of the locations may be missing from this PDF list on the RSLSA website
(suspect so when Murray Bridge and Eudunda are not on the list yet) - sub editor

Two Volunteer Trail Maintenance Groups Required.
(1 for the North, 1 for the South)

The Lavender Federation Trail and connecting trails need to be checked regularly to keep the route clear of undergrowth, intrusion by bushes and ensure it continues to be adequately marked. This work is carried out by a team of volunteers under the guidance of Trail Maintenance Manager, Stuart Shepherd.
File Image: L-R: George Adams, Julie Mathews & Trevor Mathews do some early 'trail maintenace' by replacing a stile after new fence caused removal of existing stile and a small change to fence alignment at Boolee just east of Narcoota Springs.

Circumstances have changed with two of our volunteer groups, so they are no longer able to continue helping.

We are looking for volunteers to help maintaining two sections of trail. One section is from Murray Bridge to Preamimma Road, the other from Watervale to Clare.

Individuals, families, walking clubs or groups welcome. SARTI supplies tools, equipment, a first aid kit and provides a fuel allowance.

Gilbert and Clare Valley News

Last year SARTI marked two trails for the Gilbert and Clare Valley Council.  These were both sections of the LFT and are now part of the Clare Valley Trails Network.

One trail rises to the Mt Horrocks Lookout, a spectacular view on the property of SARTI Board member, David Spackman.  The Council installed a seat at the Lookout and agreed that a memorial plaque could be installed on it in memory of one of our early supporters.

What a view - rest and take it all in.

Chris, (SARTI Chair) you picked a beautiful place for the memory of Marita

If you have not yet walked this section of trail between Mintaro and Watervale, add to your “must do” list. Stunning views to the Waterloo Wind Farm to the east and Gulf St Vincent to the west.

This section of track is currently closed during the Mid -North declared fire season (15th November to 30th April) Detour signs at both ends.

Trail Warnings & Local Events - Please Tell Us!!!

We ask that the towns & districts along the Lavender Federation Trail send us news and warning items - We would love to be able to broadcast your Community Events to our readers (if in time - to the Footsteps Readers) but more likely to those who follow the Website and our Social Media streams on Facebook and Twitter.

If LFT walkers know about your community event they may arrange thier arrival in your town or district to be present and enjoy it, creating a unique experience for them, and higher attendance for your event.

For trail warnings: some of the events in your district may not be related to walking, but they MAY actually intersect somewhere along the trail. It would be great if you could let us know, so that walkers could be prepared for safety sake, and perhaps to end up taking the time to enjoy your event. They may choose to walk in another district too, but rest assured; they will be planning to come to yours to complete thier walk of the trail.

Please realise that SARTI is not able to broadcast these events unless someone tells us about them, and sometimes we only find out about them at very short notice.
