Neighbourhood Watch in
Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby

eNewsletter #543 - 08 March 2022

This weekly eNewsletter is compiled by Neighbourhood Watch volunteers as a service for residents in Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby council areas. The eNewsletter is a new type of Neighbourhood Watch; utilising the available technology to keep people more connected and up-to-date with local crime and safety issues.

The eNewsletter includes a selection of posts from our local police at the Ku-ring-gai PAC Facebook page (also known as 'eyewatch'), primarily for those not familiar with Facebook. We add anything interesting from a Neighbourhood Watch point-of-view - this could be a local newspaper article, a roadwork warning, crime prevention tip(s), an upcoming Neighbourhood Watch meeting, Q&As from residents, or an item from another Police command ("Crooks know no boundaries!").

🚓 Have you seen anything we should share with the community?
Please email our NHW in Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby volunteers. We do value your contributions and thank you for your support.
🚓 Please feel free to

07 March, from Ku-ring-gai Command: RAFFLE TICKET FRAUD FOR FLOOD RELEIF
INVESTMENT FRAUD BITCOIN FRAUD

These are the types of frauds that occurred in the Kuring Gai Police Area Command over this last weekend with potential losses over three million dollars collectively.
If you think it will never happen to you, please take a few minutes to consider all aspects of your so-called opportunity:
RAFFLE TICKET FRAUD FO FLOOD RELIEF:
A seemingly innocent call requesting money for flood relief – Flooding is occurring right now; people are in need right now and you are in a position where you can assist right now. Add some emotion into the mix and you decide to give, based on your good nature, not your head and you find you have been scammed.
Only help if you can by donating through legitimate relief authorities, NOT through unsolicited phone calls, emails and Social media channels.
INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES and BITCOIN OPPORTUNITIES:
If it seems too good to be true, then it most likely is too good to be true.
While investment opportunities and Bitcoin investment opportunity investments exist, it is you who decides the risk factor involved in your transactions, there are way too many schemes and scams being offered online, through text messages, emails, social media, to the unsuspecting.
Before taking up any offer, speak with your solicitor, financial advisor and/or accountant before accepting any offers
04 March, from Ku-ring-gai Command: The tranquility of one of our most beautiful locations holds a dark history: MURDERS AT BOBBIN HEAD

At around 3am on 8th October 1968, experienced Police Sergeant and Mt Colah resident, Adam Schell (52) and Probationary Constable Dick Letchford, both of Hornsby Police, attended Halvorsens Boats Bobbin Head following a report of a break and enter in progress. Upon their arrival the Police were met by the caretaker Frederick William Marshall, who was in his pajamas. The Sergeant accompanied Marshall to check inside the premises.
A short time later Constable Letchford apprehended two offenders whom he had seen running from the direction Sergeant Schell and Marshall had taken. The two men caught by the Probationary Constable were William Charles Hughes (24) a labourer from Villawood and Robert Morris Picknell (25) a builder from Cabramatta.
When Police reinforcements arrived a few minutes later they were informed that Sergeant Schell and Marshall had been found critically wounded in a storeroom. Marshall had been shot in the head and Sergeant Schell had been shot five times in the face, head and body. Despite being rushed to Hornsby Hospital Sergeant Schell died six hours later during surgery. Sergeant Schell was born in 1916 and joined the New South Wales Police Force on 3 July 1939.
At sunrise the police spread out in rugged bushland in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, forming a cordon as they searched for two additional suspects, one of which was wounded. However, it appeared the men had escaped and fled the area in two vehicles. A State-wide alert was sent out for a cream Daimler and a red Alfa Romeo sports car. The Alfa Romeo was later found abandoned in Pennant Hills.
The two fugitives were apprehended six days after the murders, in the Royal National Park after a search involving 200 policemen. They were identified as Kenneth Howard Skinner (21) a labourer from Corrimal, and Jim Heath (25) a labourer of no fixed address.
All four men were charged with the murders of the Police Sergeant and boatshed caretaker, as well as for theft of goods that included ten outboard motors. They faced Hornsby Court, with the case later transferred to Central Court.
In the gun fight with Sergeant Schell, Heath had suffered a non-life threatening gun-shot wound to the chest. He was treated in Hornsby Hospital before being released into police custody. The four offenders were later sentenced to life imprisonment.

When posting on the crime in your community, we give hints and tips along the way to minimise the chances of you becoming another victim of crime.
Occasionally we indulge in some “Friday Funnies” and “What would you do?” segments, just to lighten the mood and to get us thinking about what we would actually do if faced with a certain scenario.
If there is something you feel would fit into the categories of what we post, or would like us to cover regarding Crime Prevention, please let us know.

04 March, from Ku-ring-gai Command: BE AWARE OF HOME MAINTENANCE SCAMS!!!
After all the damaging rain we’ve had, be wary of any person you do not know, or haven’t asked to attend your home, who turns up unannounced, claiming to be a tradesperson who can fix your roof, driveway, home, cut and trim your trees.
PLEASE DO NOT ENGAGE THE SERVICES OF ANYONE YOU HAVE NOT SOLICITED TO CONDUCT WORK AT YOUR HOME.

04 March, from NSW Road Safety - NSW GOV
When riding around buses and other heavy vehicles, avoid lane filtering and be aware of a bus’s blind spots. Give buses space. Road safety is a shared responsibility.

03 March, from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 050 Hornsby

There is a large tree down on Sherbrook rd Hornsby (near Burdett). Please avoid the area as the tree is across the road.
There are many road hazards at the moment around our area. Galston Gorge is closed due to land slip and so is Bobbin head national park.
There is so much water around, please stay home and stay dry. Puddles and potholes are everywhere. With resources stretched PLEASE do not drive through any flood waters.
Thursday morning the BOM tell us that we will receive some very heavy falls. Remember to save Triple Zero for emergencies.
Stay safe.
03 March, from Ku-ring-gai Command:
02 March, from Ku-ring-gai command: Rising water, flooded roads, storm-water drains, swollen creeks, and rivers.
We’re hearing about this throughout the state. This is not just a regional issue; this is what we too have experienced in the command in the last few hours. The increase of rainfall, our creeks, rivers, and storm-water drains rapidly become traps for the unwary.
DO NOT ENTER CREEKS, RIVERS, OR STORMWATER DRAINS. YOU ARE PUTTING YOUR OWN LIFE AND THE LIVES OF OTHERS AT RISK.
From the NSW Hornsby SES Unit, the message from a few hours ago is simple and still valid:
“This is a timely reminder to stay away swift moving bodies of water in and around creeks and rivers. The Hornsby area is forecasted to see up to 150mm rain within the next 24 hours”.
“For emergency help in floods and storms, call us on 132 500. If life threatening call triple zero (000)”.

07 March, fire.nsw.gov.au: EXPLOSION - MOUNT KURING-GAI

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews are at the scene of an explosion at a home in Mount Kuring-Gai in Sydney's northern suburbs.

Emergency services arrived at the Low Street home just before 10am and treated a 50-year-old woman, with burns to 80 per cent of her body, lying in the front garden.

Firefighters assisted paramedics to stabilise the patient and carry her to the waiting Ambulance.

The Careflight helicopter could not be used to transport the woman to hospital due to the severe weather.

FRNSW investigators are trying to determine the cause of the explosion.

Acting Superintendent Mathew Sigmund from Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said this is a timely reminder that calling Triple Zero (000) for a fire emergency can be the difference between life and death, or a building or other property being saved or destroyed.

The Triple Zero (000) service is the quickest way to get the right resources from emergency services to help you. It should be used to contact Police, Fire or Ambulance services in life-threatening or time-critical situations.

Hi all, a car drove into my parents' gate on Monday night around 9.46pm and drove off so we're looking for any information. They were driving up Station Street from the train station and hit the house along Telegraph Road before turning down Station Street towards Merrivale Street. Luckily no one was hurt. This is some footage of the car driving away. Thanks in advance.

03 March, from Jonathan Herman at Sydney Adventist Hospital

Trying to make my posts informative... do NOT, EVER try mushrooms from the garden/wild if you don't have expert knowledge. They can KILL and there is no known antidote for the poison found in several species, amatoxin. Check
here.
So I discovered the hard way...
The current rains brought a lot of 'plain, white' mushrooms to our lawn (pics attached). Now suspected to be lepiota venenata [**EDIT 6 Mar: many - mycologists/ mushroom experts - are suggesting they are rather chlorophyllum molybdites not lepiota venenata. This is part of the issue - identification is hard if not expert!]. There are many lepiota 'shroom species. Many are edible, some are not... at all.
[Stupid Moment/Darwin Award Candidate territory]. I thought - here's an easy food supply, but I will be careful. First rubbed some on sensitive skin, waited, licked, waited and then took a thumbnail size bite. No discernible taste difference to an ordinary mushroom. 2-3 hours later it went south pretty quickly.
I was as ill as I've ever felt in my life. Violent vomiting, simultaneous diarrhoea (like I'd had 10 courses of Picoprep), sweating and a runny nose - my body was doing everything it could to dump everything it could.
Rang Poisons (131126) and they went straight to 'is there an oak tree nearby?' ... there was/is. Shrooms near oak trees are particularly feral/dangerous.
I was conscious and lucid, but weak so ambo said they would be up to 60min (lower priority) - Mironne Golan got me to the hospital. Still retching through ED and needing to race to the bathroom, I was given an anti-emetic, bloods taken and put on a saline IV drip. Two nights later and 5L of saline later, I seem to have got through the half life of the toxin and all clear, please G-d.
Discharging now...
I'm lucky to still have my liver/kidneys (organ failure and transplant is one outcome of mushroom poisoning) if not my life
ref.
Apparently I missed this memo. but tell my story and JUST DO NOT EAT THE WILD SHROOMS!

02 March, from Australian Federal Police

More than 100 Australians have been charged with over 1,000 child abuse-related offences under a global operation involving offenders sharing abhorrent child abuse material online.
Operation Molto, coordinated by the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE), working together with every police organisation across the country, removed 51 children from harm.
Police from every state and territory in Australia executed 158 search warrants in Australia, charging 117 men with more than 1,240 charges.
These arrests were made possible by the hard work and cooperation of police from the Australian Federal Police, Queensland Police Service, Victoria Police, NSW Police Force, South Australia Police, Western Australia Police Force, Tasmania Police, Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services and ACT Policing.
The alleged Australian offenders are aged between 18 and 61 years old.
Known globally as Operation H, the multinational law enforcement effort has resulted in 153 children being removed from harm, including; 79 in the United Kingdom, 51 children in Australia, 12 in Canada, six in New Zealand, four in the United States and one child in Europe.
Some of the alleged offenders in Australia, who are also accused of producing their own child abuse material online, were in possession of material that was produced by a man the AFP arrested in 2015 under Operation Niro, which resulted in the dismantling of an international organised pedophile syndicate. The material was classified as the most abhorrent produced.
In Australia, Operation Molto has also received assistance from the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission and Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre.
ℹ️ Members of the public who have any information about people involved in child abuse and exploitation are urged to call Crime stoppers on 1800 333 000.
You can also make a report online by alerting the ACCCE via the Report Abuse button

Update: Peter, the Galston Rd crossing attendant, is in good spirits and his body is on the mend. Today he received an outpouring of heartfelt messages from the Hornsby North PS students and a beautiful bouquet of native flowers. He also received a physical print out of the virtual card signed by so many of our Hornsby Heights community and the generous donations made out in a cheque in the rear of the card, totaling $1070! Thank you HH community for your expressions of love and kindness. What a terrific neighborhood this is.
Whilst the road to recovery is still long - Peter will be in a leg brace for a good month yet - and his lovely wife is driving him to many medical appointments, they both expressed their gratitude for every one's actions in reaching out to wish him well.
Thank you HH. Let's stay safe out there, particularly in this weather.

From NHW in Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby: 'Our 20 Favourite Crime Prevention Tips for  Travel'

Tip #1. DO YOUR RESEARCH before you go: www.SmarTraveller.gov.au.  If you are a dual citizen, check the implications, eg the passport used dictates the embassy available to assist, liability for military service, etc.  If you take medications, know which are restricted & where. Take supporting documents.  If you have parental responsibility, ensure you have all consents necessary.  Register your trip with Australian Government’s DFAT Smartraveller

Tip #2. HOLD ONTO BELONGINGS such as handbags/backpacks. Beware pickpockets and bagsnatchers! When sitting, try looping bag straps around your ankles, or keep your bag on your lap. If you rest or sleep, ensure all expensive items like phones/wallets, are not visible. Take ‘tourist photos’ of unknown fellow travellers. Note: Belongings on a train/plane stored in a baggage store/over-head locker MAY NOT be covered by travel insurance – keep within sight at all times.

Tip#3. WHEN WEARING A BACKPACK, be aware that you are unbalanced, heavier and overhang, especially on a station platform, on a balcony or an escalator

Tip#7. DO NOT CHANGE THE ANSWERING-MACHINE MESSAGE to indicate you are away. Similarly, don’t post on Social Media that you are going away; no check-ins, no cruise ship as your public profile picture, no sharing of travel photos – wait until you return. Keep your travel SECRET! Consider NOT setting up a holiday auto-response email

Tip #12. CONSIDER A REDUCED CREDIT LIMIT on a credit card purely for your overseas travel. Let the bank know of your trip. To avoid being over-charged, consider using a currency exchange mobile phone App such as XE Currency. Consider wearing a hidden wallet (that attaches to a belt and tucks inside your pant’s leg). Use a wallet/bag/passport holder with RFID protection.
