Just 2 miles away is East Grinstead station where the famous Bluebell Railway line begins its 11 mile journey through the beautiful Sussex countryside. An old steam locomotive will take you via Kingscote and Horstead Keynes stations and on to Sheffield Park, a national trust garden originally designed by Capability Brown and then later developed as a woodland garden by Arthur Soames. The Hatch Inn in Colemans Hatch offers great food in a pub that dates back to before Christopher Columbus was born. (It also serves local Harveys beer!) Surrounded by Ashdown Forest it makes for a perfect pit stop after a healthy walk. The restaurant is that good that booking is essential!

Forest bathing or ‘shinrin-yoku’ was first developed in Japan in the 1980s, following scientific studies conducted by the government. The results showed that two hours of mindful exploration in a forest could reduce blood pressure, lower cortisol (stress hormone) levels and improve concentration and memory. They also found that trees release chemicals called phytoncides, which have an anti-microbial effect on human bodies, boosting the natural killer (MK) cells and our immune system. As a result of this research, the Japanese government introduced ‘shinrin-yoku’ as a national health programme.
