Updates from the local EA community

EA Philippines

We’re excited to announce that EA Philippines’ grant application for the EA Infrastructure Fund was accepted last Feb. 19! This will fund 2.32 FTE (full-time equivalent) of salary for 12 months, with it being split in this way across five of us:

  1. Elmerei Cuevas at 1 FTE (40 hrs/week) as our new Executive Director

  2. Red Bermejo at 0.5 FTE (20 hrs/week) as our new Associate Director

  3. Brian Tan at 0.5 FTE as Associate Director

  4. Janai Baril at 0.25 FTE (10 hrs/week) as our Communications and Events Associate

  5. Tanya Quijano at 0.15 FTE (6 hrs/week) as our Health and Development Community Builder

We couldn’t have achieved this without your help, so we want to thank each of you! Our work here is only just beginning, though. We aim to use this grant in an impactful way and further improve and grow the EA community here in the country.

To know more about the details of our grant application and our plans moving forward, we invite you to attend EA Philippines’ Town Hall on March 12, 8:00 - 9:15 pm. You can sign up here. Hope to see you there!

Check out this post from Stephen Clare on how likely World War III is. This post considered how likely any Great Power war is considering the base rate of international conflict. It also discussed the likelihood that such a conflict, should it occur, would escalate massively.

Want to help farmed animals without going vegan?

Even if we want to see a cruelty-free world, going fully vegan is sometimes difficult to achieve. Find out how you can tremendously help farmed animals through your diet, donations, and career/time. Note that going vegan is the best way to cause the least animal suffering through your diet. However, If you’re not ready to make the step towards full veganism yet, you can start by following the advice in this video made by Jeroen Willems from A Happier World and Jack Hancock from Humane Hancock. If you’re already vegan, this video contains some useful tips too!

Projects on longtermist biosecurity

Andrew Snyder-Beattie and Ethan Alley posted this list of longtermist biosecurity projects on the EA Forum.  Most of the projects could potentially reduce catastrophic biorisk by more than 1% or so on the current margin. Check out this list here.

News relevant to the Philippines

Where do the candidates stand on the green agenda?

As we enter the election campaign season, Filipinos need more details and clarity on the climate and environmental platforms of our candidates. Thankfully, all aspirants have recognized the urgency of addressing the climate crisis. Find out where else our presidentiables and vice-presidentiables stand on green crisis.

Organization Spotlight: Pure Earth

At present, the Philippines lacks actual data on lead levels in children’s blood, and PureEarth was able to lobby the inclusion of BLL in the NNS and will support its roll-out. The baseline BLL results for children in the Philippines will serve as a basis for ways forward to address lead poisoning in children at the policy and program level.

They are also working on a pilot to include BLL as a service component of screening patients at the Philippine General Hospital. This is envisioned to be the basis for pursuing national efforts to establish a lead monitoring and surveillance system in the Philippines to allow early intervention before significant adverse health effects develop.

PureEarth accepts volunteers who can help raise awareness on lead exposure sources, environmental and health impacts, and how people can protect themselves from such by developing information, education and communication (IEC) materials, being a champion in their own organizations and communities, launching awareness campaigns via social media or other platforms.

Job and volunteer opportunities in EA-aligned organizations

Below are some featured opportunities that are accessible to Filipinos from our Job Board. It currently has around 50 impactful opportunities (full-time, part-time, internship, and volunteer opportunities). It also has links to other relevant places where you can find impactful jobs, and we also include there how we choose which jobs to feature.

Our job board has remote jobs from foreign EA organizations, and also some roles at local organizations that we either think are impactful to work for, or they provide good experience and skills for making an impact later on.
