We exist to magnify Jesus by making disciples who share and show the transforming power of the gospel, and plant churches that multiply in the city of Greensburg and to the ends of the earth.

NEWS AND NEEDS...

Dear Gospel Partners,

It’s been said,

“Most people overestimate what they can do in one year
and underestimate what they can do in ten years.”

It’s hard to believe that January officially marked one year of church planting. One year ago, we began gathering for Sunday morning worship services in our living room - all nine of us. God has accomplished through us in a single year more than we could have ever thought or imagined! Only by God’s grace have we made friends here in Greensburg and have had many opportunities to infuse the gospel of Jesus into the everyday stuff of our lives.

So what has been happening since November?

I preached through a sermon series titled "Christmas - A Story of Love and War". We traced the storyline of Christmas from Genesis to Revelation. The series began with the curse on mankind because of Adam’s sin and continued on to God’s provision of a Savior who rescued us from sin and has taken the curse upon Himself. We had our first Christmas Eve service on December 24th during which we ended the series and celebrated the birth of Jesus with friends - both old and new.

In January we had another opportunity to partner with RSVP Gifts and More as well as City Cribs - both local businesses in Greensburg. Together, we collected items for Shelter Boxes to distribute to schools and those in need throughout Westmoreland County. It was a great collaboration and we enjoyed an evening at RSVP to help pack the boxes and load them up for distribution. Jeff Vanderstelt said it perfectly:

“We taught Christians to see themselves as the church in our city, instead of seeing the church as only an event they attend on Sunday. They learned how to see all of life as sacred and every action as part of God’s missionary work in the world. They began to see that He was in them, working through them in the normal stuff of life.”

And this is why we’re here: to share and show the transforming power of the gospel and to plant churches that multiply. There’s nothing else we’d give our lives to. 4TheCity’s aim is to reach people in the city of Greensburg with the life-giving message of the gospel - particularly to those who don’t yet know Jesus and/or who are dechurched. As we look around our church, by God’s grace, that’s who is looking back at us. Our baby church plant is currently multi-generational with our youngest being 4 years old and our oldest 80 years old - and everything in between. Three local colleges are represented in our gatherings with students who attend Seton Hill University, Westmoreland County Community College, and Saint Vincent College.

Friends, our church plant is growing! It’s so exciting to welcome people into the family - people we’ve been praying for even before we met! We are living life with people who are brand new believers and beginning their walk with Jesus. There are also family members who have known Jesus but are starting to walk with Him more intentionally. Even still there are those who are mature Christians and have been walking longer than any of us. It’s exciting to witness more and more people who are coming to the knowledge of the gospel of grace!

We kicked off our Missional Community in January. We gather on Tuesday evenings to share a good meal together, have meaningful discussions around the gospel, and pray for our church and the city of Greensburg. We are a community on mission as we seek to love and serve the people we are living everyday life with in our neighborhoods, our workplaces, and our schools. We truly are a family who understands that God has designed us for community - a place where we are known and know others. Community where our lives together show what Jesus is like - where we live, work, learn, and play. I couldn’t be more encouraged as I see the majority of our regular Sunday morning attenders also participating in Missional Community. Again, only by God’s grace.

We also kicked off our first 4TheCity Church Membership Group for those interested in membership and/or those simply wanting to know more about what we believe as a church. Our first gathering was full of good food and even better discussion about living our lives as we seek to
“Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” -2 Peter 3:18.

We are convinced that where the word of God is honored and the gospel is unashamedly preached, increase is given. The joyful labor of church planting is building a community of disciples who love one another by the empowering work of the Spirit. That’s hard - impossible even. We are painfully aware of, yet thankful for, our need to be totally dependent on the Holy Spirit. We need His presence and His power as we put one foot in front of the other and seek to faithfully love this city in word and deed.

As I sit here reflecting on this past year, I’m in awe at how God is answering our prayers. Yours too. Thank you for your continued prayers and generous financial support. We are humbled by what God is accomplishing in and through us - and you’re a HUGE part of that. We could not plant this church without your partnership. We are first and foremost dependent on the Holy Spirit. We are also dependent on our faithful, generous gospel partners who enable us to reach out to those in our city. Our worship service was almost full this week - we have been welcoming many new people into our family. Let’s celebrate together what God is doing!

***Please note for those who mail their financial gifts to us: Our mailing address has changed to 5 N. Maple Ave. Greensburg, PA 15601***

Here are a few things we would love continued prayer for:

  • Pray for us to delight in Jesus

  • Pray for our identities to be grounded in Christ

  • Pray for strong marriages and families

  • Pray for wisdom

  • Pray for favor within the city of Greensburg

  • Pray for our many gospel conversations to bear the fruit of salvation

  • Pray for more laborers to join us in our work

  • Pray for more prayer and financial partners to join us

  • Pray that Jesus would be magnified in and through us
