New Releases This Week

> David Elias, The Casual Tees

Day Three, Take 1 is a new album from Singer, Songwriter and Acoustic Guitarist David Elias and his band known as The Casual Tees. It is his 6th DSD release at NativeDSD Music from the Sketti Sandwich label.

The album is a Pure DSD* release – recorded with the Sony Sonoma DSD Workstation using DSD Analog to Digital Converters from Ed Meitner’s EMM Labs. It is a Live, Unedited Performance from April 20, 2007 at the San Gregorio General Store in San Gregorio, California.

David Elias took a minute from his home in Hawaii to share a bit more about this new DSD album: “I refer to this collection as Audio Verite’ having absorbed a little Cinema Verite in another life. What I mean here is that what you get with this recording is nothing less than the most honest way a recording can be made. A ton of work was done setting up the band, all the mics feeding preamps, then Ed Meitner’s EMM Labs DSD ADCs and a 24-channel mixer in the back storage room (“the cooler”) on the other side of the San Gregorio General Store off Hwy 1 in Northern California just south of San Francisco.

When all was said and done and the band stopped talking to themselves, they launched into each of these 19 songs, many of which had not appeared on any prior album. The crowd was local and the act was repeated 3 consecutive nights. This is the recording from the entire final 3rd night performance. John Nowland mixed 22-tracks to stereo analog during each take. His 2-channel stereo was then printed directly to the last 2 DSD tracks available on the Sonoma that Gus Skinas also recorded the entire band with.

So this album comes directly out of the Sonoma tracks 23 (left) and 24 (right) (i.e., Nowland’s stereo mix) with no edits or changes whatsoever. *The DSD tracks are 100% native DSD without compression or effects added when I mastered them as stereo DSF from the source DFF.

Yours to listen to and enjoy. My great pleasure to have been part of this congregation of Casual Tees. Much Aloha.”

> Reinless

434 is the second album by Reinless, a Jazz Fusion Band based in Lithuania. The album was recorded to Analog Tape and originally released on Stereo CD and 45 rpm Vinyl. This marks the album’s debut in Stereo DSD.

Reinless made its debut at the Broma Jazz festival in Kėdainiai in 2014. Its fiery music had already staggered audiences at several Jazz festivals in Lithuania. Jievaras Jasinskis, a gifted trombonist and composer, gathered his favorite musicians in order to realise his most daring creative visions. He writes rhythmic and vibrant music – a blend of funk, soul, rock and jazz improvisations.

Now album was analogue mastered by Vladas Straupas at AnalogFather studio especially for Native DSD. Analogue master tape was transfered directly to DSD128 format on legendary Korg MR-2000S DSD128 Studio Recorder. No equalizers, limiters, compressors or software filters are used in the production.

> Kochi

Ii is the second album from the progressive rock group Kochi. It is an original, interesting, magic & mystic musical journey through the progressive & psychedelic rock jungle. Kochi features a pair of experienced rock & jazz musicians - Kęstutis Bublys & Arvydas Jakubėnas. They take listeners away to colorful sounds and a creative music space.

Ii was recorded to Analog Tape. The album was transferred to Stereo DSD 128 from the Analog Master Tape by Vladas Straupas at Analog Father Studios especially for Native DSD. The Analog Tape was transferred directly to Stereo DSD 128 on a Korg MR-2000S DSD Analog to Digital Converter and Studio Recorder. No equalizers, limiters, compressors or software filters are used in the production of these DSD files.

> Cecilia García-García, Femke IJIstra

Colores del Sur (Southern Colors) features Saxophonist Femke IJlstra and pianist Celia García-García. They met during a performance of Shostakovich’s Jazz Suite No. 2 in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. Soon the ladies decided to form a duo named Duo IJlstra-Garcia and focus on repertoire and arrangements for this album. After several successful performances, the duo decided to make an album for the adventurous TRPTK label. They opted for warm-blooded repertoire with a distinctly Southern European and South American touch. (While this album is the duo’s debut on TRPTK, their earlier releases on Aliud and TRPTK are also available from NativeDSD and are linked below).

Colores del Sur is an impression of the atmosphere from the south. In the sultry light of the evening sun we are somewhere in a warm country. Around us, each person experiences his own story. Dance, song and passion alternate with moments full of nostalgia and melancholy.

The album contains music from the French Tableaux de Provence (by the unknown composer Paule Maurice) and fiery Spanish Siete canciones populares (by Manuel de Falla). The French composer Darius Milhaud went further, drawing inspiration from the folk music of South America in his Brasileira. With the tantalizing Five Exotic Dances by Jean Francaix , we end up in a party with various dance numbers, from languid and sensual to cheerful and energetic. A mysterious black swan by the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos, the musical painting in Maurice Ravel’s Pièce en forme de habanera, and Isaac Albéniz’s dreamy Evocación complete this picture.

IJlstra and García-García know how to give an authentic voice to this temperamental music – in which cheerfulness and melancholy go hand in hand. They play with a looseness and open-mindedness that is unprecedented.

“We want to tell a real story and play from our feelings, we want to be ourselves. We take you to the musical south where we sing, dream and dance together in the warm evening light” say Celia & Femke.

The results are worth it, with passionate performances that sometimes have an exciting frayed edge.

About This Album

Rachel Podger says, “Immersing myself in the 12 Concertos of ‘La Stravaganza’ was an intense and exhilarating experience, and one which has left me full of wonder at Vivaldi’s endless capacity for invention. Having had many opportunities to get to know his music ever since I started playing the violin (the well-loved A minor Concerto from L’estro Armonico is one of the set pieces in Suzuki’s violin method and played by most 6-10 year olds!) the Seasons and L’estro featuring strongly in baroque concert programs, it was with interest but also several pre-conceptions that I approached these relatively obscure concertos.

I arrogantly assumed I’d have to put my mind to making them sound as different from each other as possible, as they wouldn’t assert their own character within the set by themselves. I’m ashamed of that thought now, since I quickly realized that I wasn’t dealing with ‘same-y’ music at all, but with extreme inventiveness within a definite framework. Vivaldi uses melodic figurations in so many remarkable ways. It’s as though he likes to experiment with every variant and push the players beyond expectation of what might be coming next.”

The 25% discount is automatically applied in your cart until March 18th, 2022, when we announce the new Album of the Week.
