Jean Valjean: Grace Well Received

Last week we began our Lenten Worship Series with an overview of the story of Les Miserables, the late 19th century French novel by Victor Hugo and an acclaimed musical.  The overarching theme of Les Miserables is how a person is shaped by grace, becoming a vessel of grace and good for others.  Hence, the title of our series, “The GRACE of Les Miserables.”
This week, we begin to introduce individual characters from the story.  Sunday we’ll get to know more about the lead character of the story, Jean Valjean, prisoner 24601.  The title of the message is, “Grace Well Received.”  Our Scripture passage will be John 8:2-11, the story of Jesus and the woman accused of adultery.
Don’t forget, Pastor Lori will lead a lesson from Matt Rawle’s study “The Grace of Les Miserables” in the parlor at 11 am on Sunday.  Over 30 stayed for the study last week, and there is room for more!

Until Sunday,

We have passed our first Sunday mile marker and are diving into the Lenten season. We started our wonderful sermon series this past week, “The Grace of Les Miserables”, as well as the discussion group!

A Word From Our Youth Director

“So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!” – 2 Corinthians 5:17

While we may be having extreme jumps in our temperature, there is no doubt that spring is coming.  Plants will soon start to come up from the ground.  Leaves will once again fill the trees. Blooms will fill all of the flowering plants.  And birds will return to sing each morning.  Perhaps you have already noticed some of these things beginning to happen.  New life is all around us!

This weekend we took our confirmation class on retreat to Camp Horizon.  Confirmation is a wonderful opportunity in the faith lives of our youth – a chance for new life to begin in their faith.  It is always amazing to watch their faith sprout and grow throughout the process, and this past weekend was an amazing opportunity to watch the seeds of their faith begin to sprout forth as they explored their personal relationships with God.  I am excited about this new growth in their faith, and can’t wait to see it blossom with new life!

Thanks,

Bryce Fuhrmann
Youth Director

Page-turners are exciting books, the kind you don’t want to put down, the kind you would stay up extra late to read. Books are exciting when we can find ourselves in the stories and imagine being a part of the adventure. This month we are going to look at some of the page-turning stories of the Bible. Each of these stories has something valuable to teach us about our patient and powerful God who prepares us to fight temptation and celebrates us, the heroes in our own real-life adventures!
Our “Big Idea” this week is God is more powerful than evil.

Join us on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings as we investigate some of the page-turning stories of the Bible.

There will be NO WOW for children next week for spring break! Enjoy your week off!

With our attendance on Sunday mornings picking up, I would love to separate our kids back into age groups. But to do that I need help! Would you consider volunteering one or more Sunday mornings a month? Ideally, we will have Kindergarten through 2nd grade, 3rd Grade (Bible Boot Camp), and Club 45 back on Sunday mornings. I will need 2 more volunteers each Sunday morning to make that happen. This will benefit the kids greatly as they move into deeper conversations about where they are in their own lives without fearing what the older or younger children around them might think. If you are called to volunteer your time with these awesome kiddos, please let me know! We would be forever grateful for your gifts of time and energy with these cool kids!

See you soon!

Caitlin

Spring Forward

Daylight Saving Time will begin on Sunday, March 13, at 2:00 a.m.

Set your clocks ahead one hour before going to bed on Saturday night.

Covid Restrictions Eased

As of 03/01/2022, Woodlawn’s Reopening Team has dropped most restrictions that had been implemented at Woodlawn during the Covid 19 pandemic because of the significant improvement locally in new case rates, hospitalizations and positivity test rates.  Though face masks are no longer required in the building, health officials emphasize that people should still wear face coverings if they wish or if they are personally at high risk and that regardless of local conditions, anyone should mask who has COVID-19 symptoms, a positive test, or has been exposed to someone with COVID-19.

Moving forward, the Woodlawn Reopening Team will factor in the Center for Disease Control’s new guidelines for assessing community risk, which weigh local hospital capacity more heavily than rates of new infections alone. Should Sedgwick county reach a “high” rating on the CDC county risk map, restrictions could be reinstated by the Reopening Team. Currently Sedgwick County’s risk is “medium.”

Spring break is approaching, and Woodlawn has activities planned for middle school and high school youth Monday, 3/14-Thursday, 3/17

Mon, 3/14: Urban Air Trampoline Park (3:30-7:00pm) - $25

Tue, 3/15: Day Of Service @KS Food Bank (1-4pm)
The Food Bank’s Covid policy requires proof of vaccination and wearing of a mask.
Please make sure to bring these with you!
They also require closed-toe shoes.

Wed, 3/16: Bonfire (6-9pm) – $5
Meet at the Calhoun’s house (520 W White Tail St)

Thu, 3/17: Area 51 Escape Room
(2-4:30pm) - $25

WUMC GEARHEADS!!

Have you recently lost a drag-race to a Tesla?  Do you think Elon Musk is a visionary or a con-man?  For some opinions and answers bring  your ideas and appetite to the Thursday Men’s Breakfast and Book Study at 7 AM, starting again on March 17. The book is “Ludicrous: The Unvarnished Story of Tesla Motors.” We conclude each time by 8:00 AM.

Food service at WUMC was recently approved by the Reopening Committee, but watch this space in the weeks ahead, as the virus is unpredictable. Call the office at 788-1507 or Frank O’Donnell at 788-3224 for the latest word.
Two New Stephen Ministers to be Commissioned

This Sunday, two new Woodlawn UMC Stephen Ministers will be commissioned during the 9 o’clock worship service.  Charles Jeffries and Linda Sterrett have completed their training and now serve on our Stephen Ministry team.  The congregation is asked to pray for these servants along with all of our Stephen Ministers, that they may be effective caregivers and servants of Christ.  Stephen Ministers are trained and available to walk alongside others in Christian friendship during times of grief, struggle, or loneliness. To find out more or to request a Stephen Minister, contact Kelly Gifford at 316-708-0961 to be matched with a Stephen Minister today.

Our annual golf tournament is coming up on April 9th!
Woodlawn UMC has a long history of providing meaningful spiritual experiences for children and youth in our community. Our mission is to spiritually shape people to be the heart, hands, and feet of Jesus. One way that we are able to do that effectively with our children and youth is through our camping ministry at Camp Horizon. In a typical year, we send approximately 75 youth and children to Camp Horizon for a week of connecting with God through nature, community, and worship. In order to make this affordable for each of our families, we pay half the cost (up to $100) for each person who registers for camp. That means we need more than $6000 to cover the cost of camp for our children and youth. All the money raised from the sponsorships of our upcoming golf tournament will go toward covering this cost for our summer camps this year.

Do you know of anyone who would like to be a sponsor? We have 3 ways to sponsor ranging from $25-$100. Contact Caitlin Ott or Bryce Fuhrmann for more information. Sign up in the church office.

Stephen Ministers are here to help

Grieving the loss of a loved one is difficult under any circumstances, but the effects of the ongoing coronavirus crisis have made grief even harder for many. Family members may have been isolated from their loved one and not had the chance for closure or saying their final goodbyes. If you are suffering a loss and are having difficulty coping with feelings and living without them, please allow a Stephen Minister to help carry this burden. You do not have to travel this difficult time alone. Call Kelly Gifford-316 708 0691 to be matched with a Stephen Minister.
United Methodist Women Is Now United Women in Faith

United Methodist Women is now United Women in Faith! The move is part of a refreshing of the organization that includes a new logo and an array of new and improved programs to nurture current members and welcome new women to join to put their love in action on behalf of women, children, and youth.

New and innovative programs will be rolled out throughout 2022, including:
  • A new, easier-to-navigate website with a homepage designed to pique new women’s interest in United Women in Faith and a special portal set to come online later this year where members can log in to access additional resources.
  • A new “All-Access” National Membership Option enables women to join United Women in Faith via the new website and participate online or in-person at local units or larger events.
  • Soul Care Retreats, a pilot recruitment program for members and their nonmember friends and new women-focused on nurturing women’s bodies, minds, and spirits.
  • Innovations to Mission U, the organization’s longtime spiritual growth and transformative education program. Beginning in spring 2022, Mission U will introduce new curricula each year—one for children, one for youth, and one for adults—all focused on a shared Biblical theme. The new Mission U curricula will be more adaptable for use in small groups, local churches, vacation Bible schools, retreats, and other settings. Through these vibrant, relevant, justice-oriented, and biblically centered curricula, Mission U will continue its commitment to learning together for the transformation of the world and expand its impact.
  • More targeted giving options and new interactive online resources for members.
