DeBakey Artists at the Houston MFA!

DeBakey Artists have done it again this year! First the 33 Gold & Silver Key awards at Scholastic Art Contest, the 6 finalists in the Rodeo School Art Contest and now an incredible turnout at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. I feel incredibly proud to announce that sixty-four DeBakey artists are part of the 27th Eye on Houston: High School Documentary Photography exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Among 850 submissions by nine high school students in Houston, only a 100 were selected to be part of the show. Four of the 64 students have two of their photographs selected which means that there are a total of 68 works in the exhibition by DeBakey students. Yes you read correctly: 68 out of 100 photos in the show belong to DeBakey Artists! WOW!

Being part of a nationally known museum and having their works displayed alongside the museum’s permanent and traveling collections, is not only an exciting achievement, but also a great honor for our artists :)

Here is a link to the MFAH’s website about the exhibition: https://www.mfah.org/exhibitions/eye-on-houston-high-school-documentary-photography-2022

Official opening date is March 11. The show runs through January 2023. Please take some time and check out their amazing work at the museum!

Silent Sky is the UIL One Act Play this year. Silent Sky is based on the true story of female astronomer Henrietta Leavitt who, in 1900, made a discovery that led to our ability to map our universe. We will have public performances at DeBakey March 23-26th at 7pm. We are officially opening Ad sales/ Sponsorships for Spring Semester programs buy an Ad and become a sponsor!

Do you have a student athlete?

If your student plays sports for their zoned school (ex. Bellaire, Lamar....), please send an email to president@debakeypto.org. Please include: student's full name, class/grade, sport(s), coach's name and which Zoned school.

REMINDER: Volunteer Hours

REMINDER:  Every DeBakey student must have at least 100 community service to graduate with a DeBakey diploma.

Remember, colleges look at the community service and how you give back to your community when choosing a candidate to accept into their school.

Guidelines for Community Service Hours >>
  1. Every DeBakey student must have at least 100 community service to graduate with a DeBakey diploma. Remember, colleges look at the community service and how you give back to your community when choosing a candidate to accept into their school.
  2. When hours served are not with an organization or club at DeBakey, you have three options for reporting hours:
    1. Letter on letterhead from the location where you served giving the dates served, total hours, your name, and signed by the person responsible for you when you served.
    2. Certificate from the organization with the dates served, total hours, your name, and signed by the person responsible for you when you served.
    3. A DeBakey verification form with a business card attached from the person who signs the form for you.
  3. If you receive a certificate for your service, make sure it has the above information as well as the physical address and phone number of the location. If it does not, please include a business card with the address and phone number of the location.
  4. Every person is responsible for his/her own hours even when serving with a group or a club from DeBakey. Turn in your own verification forms in person to Mrs. Niaves in Room 123.
  5. Make copies of all verification forms that you turn in for credit. Give the copies to Mrs. Niaves and keep the originals at home in a safe place. I can not provide copies to the students when you need to submit them to colleges or scholarships. YOU NEED TO KEEP A COPY OF ALL YOUR VOLUNTEER HOURS!!!!!
  6. It is a good idea to turn in verification forms at the end of each semester. Don’t wait until the yearly turn-in-date!
  7. Please write your year of graduation at the top of every verification form that you submit.
  8. If you have any question about what an acceptable type of service is, contact Ms. Niaves. Room 123.
  9. Talk with Ms. Niaves personally before you do community service outside the Houston Metropolitan area.
  10. The first 75 hours must be done in Houston Metropolitan area. Give back to our community!
  11. All volunteer hours must be turned in no later than January of your senior year!
