The Confetti Movement Blooms into Spring

with New Screening Hosts, Updates from Africa and Special Education News!

As the year continues and Spring flowers begin to bloom, the Confetti Movement is working hard to spread joy and hope to new communities with more wonderful screening events and initiatives.

We are excited to introduce the people and organizations who have made the start of 2022 so special by hosting screenings of the film, as well as opening up interactive discussion around CONFETTI's themes of inclusion, understanding and empathy – values that are especially important to us all as we navigate difficult events occurring in the world.

Saluting our March Screening Hosts!

Thank you so our latest hosts who have signed up to present virtual and in-person screenings of CONFETTI, we salute you!
The Asian American and Asian Resource and Cultural Center (AAARCC) at Purdue University hosted a screening and Ann participated in a Q&A moderated by Dr. Margaret Tillman, Director, Asian Studies Program, and Lisa Yates, Access Consultant, Disability Resource Center.

Introducing our latest host: Hunter College
Asian American Studies Program & Center

Launched in 2019, the Asian American Studies Center at Hunter College offers compelling public programming and student engagement projects, and supports faculty research around Asian Americans, the humanities, and key policy issues.

On February 15, the Center was proud to host an in person/virtual screening of Confetti, followed by a panel discussion with writer/director Ann Hu, Nelson Mar, an attorney at Bronx Legal Services, who is doing significant work in Asian American communities to ensure that they receive appropriate special education services and Chris Kwok, an Asian American Studies adjunct faculty member at Hunter College who has been active in speaking and writing about anti-Asian violence and harassment.

Dr. Vivian Louie, director of Asian American Studies at Hunter College and professor of Urban Policy & Planning, moderated the panel and the event was co sponsored with the Departments of Special Education & Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at Hunter College.

Nearly 90 persons attended the 2.5 hour event, during which the audience and panel engaged in lively discussion around questions like:

- How members of the community can be better advocates to address these issues given the stigma?
- How race/citizenship status affect the process for Asian immigrant parents seeking appropriate services for their special needs children?
- How the model minority stereotype of Asian Americans affects this process?
- How training of teachers in China to recognize the signs of dyslexia in China can be modeled from the United States?
- How the panelists saw themselves as advocates, activists, and in the case of Ann, an artist.

Dr. Vivian Louie writes:
“This was a unique opportunity to illuminate two topics that are deserving of far more attention: Asian Americans and special education and the critical role of the arts in activism. We so appreciated this occasion to bring Ann and Confetti to our Hunter community and the broader public, who joined us.”

Confetti World Commences!

In the last newsletter, we highlighted the amazing Sherri Donovan esq., top U.S. family lawyer and founder of the international non-profit, Art Helping Life, Inc and reported the news that Sherri and Ann Hu would collaborate on an initiative called Confetti World.

To kickstart this incredible collaboration, Ann, Sherri and Sherri's husband – celebrated Senegalese singer, Mamadou Waflash – began creating a free Confetti World Concert. CONFETTI will be screened and Mamadou will sings songs from the film, along with his own compositions that have garnered him the title, the Bob Dylan of Africa.

Sherri writes:
"We are very excited to get moving. Mamadou has been rehearsing songs and his version of “Little Bee” sounds very good and will be easy & fun for the children, as well as being good for their English! He has also made a new song mixed with English and the local dialect, Wolof, that starts out: “It’s a Confetti World...the children tell me so.” It's very beautiful!

Check out this lovely video of Mamadou rehearsing the song "Little Bee" from CONFETTI with the local children – we think they sound great already!

As members of the CONFETTI team, we would like to extend a special thank you to the many hosts who have become ambassadors for the Confetti Movement over 2021 and into 2022.
The news updates show that awareness about the importance of Special Education and inclusive learning environments is growing and having a major impact, but we need more people like you to join the movement and spread the power of CONFETTI.
