Rethinking Assessments

The pandemic made us take a hard look at most aspects of our lives and consider if there were new ways to do old things. One area of education that received a lot of attention was online assessment and whether testing remotely made it too easy to cheat.

This month, we continue our Lasallian Way Online podcast series about academic integrity. We'll look at ways to redesign assessments that can limit cheating and improve the quality of learning.

Also in this newsletter:

  • Set your office hours for advising in Starfish
  • Join us for a Community of Inquiry next Friday! We'll discuss practices and tools to curb cheating online
  • Sign Up for our Instructional Video and Video Editing courses

LWO Series: Academic Integrity

Tools/Practices to Improve Online Assessment
We've launched a special The Lasallian Way Online (LWO) series inspired by our conversations with CBU faculty. This is the final installment of our series about academic integrity in online courses, and how we can approach it as Lasallian educators.
CBU Instructional Designers, Tyler Isbell, Kyle Purpura, and Shontale Bryant share ideas that can curb cheating, while also enhancing the value of assessment.

Follow the same link below to catch up on previous episodes in this series.  LWO is a monthly podcast produced by the Center for Digital Instruction (CDI). It is dedicated to issues in online education, and how we can approach them from the Lasallian tradition.

Changing Office Hours for Advising

Starfish is the simple way to schedule meetings with your advisees! When you sync your Outlook calendar to Starfish, students can only set appointments for blocks of times you've added.
Synching Outlook with Starfish will help you avoid double booking. If you make an appointment in Outlook that conflicts with your Starfish Office Hours, Starfish will make that time unavailable for future student appointments.

If you've already set up Office Hours in Starfish, here's a simple guide to update hoursCheck out our Faculty All-in-One How-To guide for Starfish. You'll also find a link in this guide to share a Starfish How-To designed for your students. We encourage you to email this link to students so they can get the support they need at CBU.

Advising for Online Courses
Prepare Your Advisees for Online Learning

Nearly all students have experienced virtual learning but few have taken asynchronous online courses like we offer at CBU. It's a different mindset to manage their own time. You can help prepare them during advising.
Here's an infographic with key points to share with students about online learning!
