Typically, we have advance notice of construction work, but this time, we learned about it alongside our families last week! After checking in with the county, we have found out they will be working on 50th Avenue for the next 6-8 weeks. Please plan ahead for some extra time at drop off and pick up.

Program Spotlight
Developing Self Smarts
|
|
|
One of the types of intelligence identified by Howard Gardner is intrapersonal smarts, or "self smarts." Students develop these skills when they reflect on their own needs and acheivements, and when they engage in confidence building activities. These kinds of activities might be a direct social emotional lesson, or it might come through a more intregrated approach like what we see our Pre-K students do in their All About Me thematic unit.
These clay self portaits were created with students as they studied their features. The Mazama students have been talking about how we are all unique, even while having so much in common. Conversations about families, pets, hobbies, bodies, and more allowed our students to honor who they are while seeing the connections to one another. One activity our students do as part of this project is to use their materials to create a skin color that best reflects what they see in the mirror. Students share their observations of self with their classmates, building connections, understandings, and empathy.

Community Spotlight
Thank you, volunteers!
We had the perfect weather for our Gardner Garden Work Party on Saturday! We had parents, students, and community volunteers here and we are so thankful for all the work that was completed! Our garden beds look great, and our ready for students to start planting with their classes. We tackled some other spring cleaning tasks, too, as we prepare for more facilities work to happen over Spring Break.

Learning in Action
STEM Challenges and Teamwork
|
|
Ask, imagine, plan, create, improve, reflect. These are the steps our 2nd grade students went through as they completed their latest building STEM challenge in teams. The skills students learn from activities like this transfer to other subject areas, too, and encourage them to be flexible thinkers, resilient learners, and good partners.

Symptom Screening Reminder
Anyone with Covid-19 symptoms is required to report to health@gardnerschool.org to be cleared to be at school and stay home until cleared to return. Testing to return will still be expected in most situations.

Did you receive the iHealth government tests, but aren't sure how to use this brand versus the ones you may have been getting from the store previously? Here is a short instructional video to learn more about how to test using the iHealth brand. As a reminder, we have tests to share with our community! Don't hesitate to ask for tests by emailing Courtney Tomlinson at ctomlinson@gardnerschool.org.
