Dear <<First Name>> (ID No. <<ID No.>>)

Term 2 courses and enrolments

Screenshot of the cover of the Term 2 2022 Course Guide Notes. We have great new short courses coming up in Term 2, most of them face-to-face.

As usual, course information is now all available on the Courses page of the U3A Melbourne City website, and it is very easy to navigate the listing to find what you need. (Please note that the word "Open" next to a course name does not imply that enrolments are open now - just that the class has places available.)

In addition, you can download the Term 2 2022 Course Guide Notes, which include a summary of the new courses available, enrolment information, and listings of all other classes according to whether they are face-to-face or on Zoom.

Enrolments open at 10 am on Tuesday, 5 April (and not before).
Term 2 classes are from Tuesday, 26 April to Friday, 24 June.

How to enrol

Via the MyU3A Portal (preferred)

Log in to MyU3A and select the Classes 2022 button twice. Select the day-of-the-week OR the course category to get a shorter list of all classes for the year.

Screenshot of courses listing highlighting the "Term 2 Short Courses" button.

  1. Tick the check box next to Request for the course you want.
  2. Check the last column for the course enrolment status: Open, TBA, Wait list. (TBA means the enrolment will be reviewed by the tutor before acceptance can be confirmed.)
  3. Very important: Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and click on the Next button.
  4. Check that the class you have just enrolled in is Listed on this page. If it is not listed then you did not succeed in enrolling. You will need to try again.

Via the office

If you are unable to enrol online, please email citymelb@u3a.org.au or call us on (03) 9639 5209, and office staff will attend to your request as soon as possible.

Hiking the Length of the Thames

David McRae

It is 237 km from the official source of the Thames to Hampton Court Palace, through seven counties and from one side of England to the other. The country reveals a certain amount of itself on this journey - geographically, historically and socially. A glorious and fascinating walk (with the added advantage of having avoided being murdered in Midsomer).

Chair Yoga

Nene Macwhirter

Want to improve your fitness, balance and flexibility without the huff and puff? This will be a mostly seated yoga class catering to all current levels of fitness. No experience of yoga practice needed but if you've ever wondered about what yoga is, this is a good chance to learn about some basic principles. Experienced yogis also very welcome! Although newly qualified as a Level 1 yoga teacher, Nene has been practising yoga for over 40 years.

Making the most of life's opportunities

With Anne Tudor, Victorian Senior of the Year 2021
Thursday, 19 May, 2.30 pm

Performance Centre, Library at the Dock, 107 Victoria Harbour Promenade, Docklands

Photo of Anne Tudor, 2021 Victorian Senior of the Year Awards. In 2010, Anne's life partner was diagnosed with younger onset dementia. She was 59. They decided to put their experience to good use by supporting others impacted by dementia and by trying to change societal attitudes to dementia. The decision transformed a heart-breaking reality into something which had a profound effect not only on the two of them, but on others affected by dementia, dementia service providers, the local community of Ballarat and way beyond. In 2016, Bigger Hearts Dementia Friendly Ballarat Campaign was born. This presentation will focus on some unexpected and truly magical outcomes resulting from their decision to become advocates. Anne was awarded the 2021 Senior Victorian of the Year for the work that she will share at this presentation.

This event is free to U3A MC members but you must register through MyU3A. Non-members are welcome to attend for a fee of $10 and must register through Trybooking.

Spring Lunch, Friday 27 May, 12.30 pm

William Angliss Institute, 555 La Trobe Street, Melbourne

Note that our original plan was to have a Winter 2022 lunch in August but this has been reviewed and we'll rely on these two lunches to get together.

Spotlight on our volunteers

Liz Mullin

Photo of Liz MullinLiz is tutor to our Monday Writers group. Having consumed the work of Enid Blyton, Liz's first foray into writing herself came at the age 10 when she wrote a play performed by classmates at St. Bernardette's School, Ivanhoe. After initial thoughts about teaching, Liz did shorthand and typing instead and landed her first job as a junior in the office of Henry Bolte, Victoria's longest serving and somewhat controversial Premier. She remembers that he always spoke kindly to her when she took in his morning cup of tea - yes, it was a long time ago! Soon she transferred to the Public Attorney's Office and it was here that her interest in law was first kindled. It had to wait to take fire as, aged 20, she married and moved to Templestowe.

Three children soon followed: Stuart who works in Denmark in renewable energy, Rachel in Dimboola looking after marginalised children, and Tim, born with Down's Syndrome, who died five years ago at the age of 46. Liz says that being gifted Tim was the best thing that ever happened to her and that he was the glue that held the family together. She taught him to read by the age of three. After 13 years and with the help of parents and parents-in-law, Liz was able to return to work and became a legal secretary - an occupation that maintained its fascination until she retired thirty years later.

Liz joined our U3A in 2012 and was able to pick up on her 10-year-old self by joining our Scriptwriters group. Then she took over Monday Writers where she has been ever since. Liz has enormous reserves of empathy and has kept the class going despite the ongoing serious illness of husband Don and the vicissitudes of COVID. Sharing their work through Zoom contributed to their sanity but getting back to seeing each other in the flesh every week has been a bonus. One of her students is Will Semler who started the group in 2005 and is still going strong at nearly one hundred. Two others are taking part in our "Who Do We Think We Are?" show: Joan Hammond will be talking about her Indigenous heritage, and Rosie Hersch about her parents' escape from Poland. The talent in her class is amazing and has no doubt been developed by Liz's exceptional gift for bringing out the best in people. A big thank you Liz from all of us.

Merilyn Harris

And if you would like to see Joan and Rosie in action there are still places available for the show on Friday: www.trybooking.com/events/landing/873250.

High tea on the high sea: Let's Do Weekends

Photo of Magic Charters boat before departing on a cruise around the bay.On Saturday 14 March, fabulous ladies ventured out to enjoy a glorious sunny day on the smooth waters of the bay.

Our day, for some guests, started off as an adventure … Liz was on a tram that got tangled up with a car(!), necessitating a quick cab ride. Wendy, a new U3A gal, left her phone behind and had to make a quick dash home to retrieve it, arriving with literally one minute to spare, and a few others got caught up with tram delays caused by a protest rally.

So everyone was looking forward to some relaxation and a glass of bubbles.

Photo of members of Let's Do Weekends enjoying lunch on the Magic Charter cruise.During the two-hour cruise on a very elegant double-decker catamaran, we all enjoyed a complimentary glass or two of bubbly, hot savoury canapes with gourmet sandwiches, and rolls. All followed by delicious desserts and freshly baked scones served with chantilly cream and strawberry preserve. And of course we took in the delights of the wonderful river and bayside scenery all the way down to Williamstown.

A totally great day.

How does your brain age and change the way it uses energy? We know that with age the brain experiences slower information processing, poorer memory, attention deficits and so on.

The Cognitive Neurology Laboratory at the Turner Institute for Brain and Mental Health at Monash University is looking to better understand the mechanisms of brain ageing and to explore new ways we might be able to keep our brains younger and healthier for longer.
