March/April 2022 - Newsletter Digest

Ready for the fourth annual Green Shirt Day?

Animated video produced by BC Transplant with support from Canadian Blood Services.
April 7 is Green Shirt Day. It's a day to honour, remember, and recognize all the victims and families of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash and to continue Logan Boulet’s legacy by inspiring Canadians to talk to their families and register as organ and tissue donors.

In the four years since its inception, enthusiasm has grown among the organ donation and transplant community, schools, and workplaces to take part in Green Shirt Day.

Green Shirt Day has become a flagship annual campaign in the national effort to get more Canadians to register their decision about organ donation and make sure their loved ones know.

This year's Green Shirt Day Ambassador Toolkit encourages people across Canada to engage their provinces and cities to proclaim April 7th Green Shirt Day and light up landmarks in green.

Canadian Blood Services is proud to partner with the Boulet family and the Canadian Transplant Association, Canada’s Organ and Tissue Donation Community, and the Kidney Foundation of Canada to promote organ and tissue donation and transplantation this Green Shirt Day...

The goal of Green Shirt Day 2022 is to inspire 100,000 new registered organ and tissue donors nationally. There are many ways you can help:
  • Wear green on April 7 in honour of Logan Boulet and his Bronco Family, and the Logan Boulet Effect.
  • Remind everyone why it's so important to talk to our families and to register to become an organ donor.
  • Inspire your community. Light up your porch lights, buildings, and landmarks green on Green Shirt Day. The goal is to light up 2022 landmarks across Canada on April 7.
  • Spread the word on social media. Encourage others to become organ and tissue donors by spreading awareness online using the hashtags whenever possible: #GreenShirtDay #LoganBouletEffect, #LightUpGreenCanda.
  • Become an Ambassador for Green Shirt Day by using the Ambassador Toolkit for many best practices, templates, and links to support Green Shirt Day.

National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week is April 24-30, 2022

April 2022 marks the 25th anniversary of National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week (NOTDAW). Bill C-202, enacting National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week in Canada was passed unanimously by the Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science, and Technology on Feb. 4, 1997. The bill was brought forward by former Liberal Member of Parliament Dan McTeague. The last full week of April was chosen to mark the occasion and to commemorate the death of Stuart Herriott, a toddler killed in a motor vehicle incident in McTeague’s riding of Pickering-Scarborough East. Parents of two-and-a-half-year-old Stuart donated his organs and, in turn, helped to save and improve the lives of four others.

We are grateful for the collaboration that makes National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week possible. We congratulate our partners in the organ and tissue donation community in Canada for their amazing work in increasing awareness of the importance of organ and tissue donation in Canada, making the essential difference in saving lives and honouring the powerful impact of families that have lost their loved ones.
  • Digital tools and messaging for both Green Shirt Day and National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week are available here.
