MESSAGE FROM ALEXANDRA

Dear All,

I hope you had a restful break and are enjoying the first bursts of spring.

These are difficult times as we enter the fourth week of the Russian invasion in Ukraine, with profound political, economic and social implications, including more than 3.5 million refugees, tens of thousands of deaths, displacement, separation and devastation. As people in Ukraine are fighting for their dignity and lives, we stand in solidarity with those who resist the bleak, authoritarian, and remorseless logic of this invasion and any military occupation. As we expressed in the Global Studies statement about the war, our program is committed to creating space for events and teach-ins to discuss the situation as it unfolds. Our next event will take place on April 7 and we will be sharing details soon. We have also put together a list of resources and information to learn more about the situation and consider ways to provide support.

Our program is also committed to developing a curriculum that offers tools to understand and respond to pressing global issues , considering their histories, their implications, and the intersections across different struggles. We invite you to take a look at our courses addressing questions about conflict and security, liberation struggles, political economy, international law and other topics. We are excited to announce two new courses: Global Humanitarianisms taught by political ethnographer Patrick Ciaschi, and Resistance Narratives from 21st Century Social Movements taught by Shanelle Matthews, communications director for the Movement for Black Lives.

As registration begins next week, check out the note below from our amazing academic advisor, Chris McElderry.

We are also excited about the Law and Social Change ULEC, which is one of the required courses for the new law and social change minor. There will be an opportunity to talk about the minor and more broadly about paths to law school during our first coffee hour of the semester on March 31. Claire Thomas, one of our own faculty and an amazing advocate and lawyer focusing on refugee and asylum law, will talk about her experience and answer questions from those interested in pursuing a career in law. We look forward to gathering in person and sharing snacks!

Finally, we are thrilled to announce that our Global Studies team is joined by Pilar Ortiz-Diaz, our new Student Assistant, whom some of you may already know. We’re excited to welcome her!

Warmly,

Alexandra Délano Alonso

Message from Chris McElderry

Dear Students,

I hope this community message finds you well -- it's a time in the semester when work can start to build up and things can get intense.  On top of that, summer and fall registration starts April 4th.  The most important thing you can do is prepare: check your DegreeWorks, the program requirements, the course catalog, your registration date and time, whether you have holds, and then meet with me!  You can make appointments with me through Starfish; if I'm not in your network we can coordinate over email.

I'm here to help you craft a Global Studies pathway that speaks to your passions and goals, but I can only do that if we communicate.  Please reach out with any advising-related questions, at any time.

I look forward to seeing you at the Global Studies Coffee Hour on the 31st!

Best,

Chris
